Junsu’s interview from Asiana Airlines journal

This fall, there’s a korean musician who tours around the world with his music and dance: XIAH JUNSU, once a member of TVXQ and now Kim Junsu, a member of JYJ and a musical actor. With rewriting K-pop history, he is keeping his fresh and bold steps by releasing his first solo album under the name of ‘XIA.’ His step is so brave as if he tries to reach the apex of K-pop power in his every concert on the worldwide tour. He participated in the minutest part of the recording process of the latest album, showing his firm determination as an artist. Where does this young man, who his shaping his own future, get his confidence from? We tried to answer this question through an e-mail interview as the singer was about to wrap up his successful New York and LA concerts.

Q. What is the overall keyword of the latest album <TARANTALLEGRA>?
A. There are largely two words: XIA and Unequalled. In light of putting all music that I want to do and I can do, ‘XIA’ is the word expressing everything I’ve been showing to the people. There are a variety of genre like pop, dance, ballad, R&B, hiphop, and electronics. In light of no TV promotion, I thought I had to make top-notch music and focused on ‘Unequalled’ music which leads the unequalled trend.

Q. You once said the title song TARANTALLEGRA is not a song to listen but a song to watch.
A. Yes. The latest music is inspired from the musical ELIZABETH in which I was participating. With acting the mysterious and charismatic DEATH who stands between a god and a man, I made this dream-like pop song. The title means a spell to make people dance. I tried to make a dramatic and extraordinary music video and put effort in details including fashion and choreography. This song can be completed with visual factors.

Q. You becomes the first Korean soloist singer to have concerts in Mexico, Brazil, and Chile. What makes this worldwide tour begin?
A. During JYJ’s worldwide tour I came to know there are many fans in North&South America and Europe and was motivated to work harder. I earn passion and energy from overseas fans’ response. After releasing the solo album and doing the Asia tour, I’ve earned more confidence. And, the main reason is ‘not to be complacent and hesitate but to move forward to a bigger goal.’

Q. (invisible)
A. (invisible) Musical teaches me a joy to interprete the established one into my own and to cooperate with other performers and staff to complete it. And I realize another potential I never knew, and it inspires me not only as a musical actor Kim Junsu but also as a singer XIA.

Q. After nine years from your debut, you can be more active in working and you seem to have a sense of accomplishment.
A. There’s happiness beyond a sense of accomplishment. Currently I’m not following the road that someone shows me, but coming up with ideas by myself and doing what I want. It’s so hard but rewarding. It heightens a sense of satisfaction as a singer. Compared with the past, I think I got maturer and knowledge of the world, and gradually grew into a man.

Q. You went to the other side of the world with K-pop. Our expectations are high for your future.
A. I’m grateful for big love and I have to try harder and think more. Like the latest solo album or worldwide tour, I will try new musical and continue my challenge in music. JYJ’s long-time-prepared 2nd worldwide album will be proceeded next year.

Atstar1’s interview with Kim Junsu – A man with charming transformation

A man who constansly changed and never stays in one place, Kim Junsu.
He, who attempted at many transformations and is never afraid of them, took his time to be with @star1.
As a JYJ member, a musical actor and also as a solo singer.
A man who is running with no rest and never stops, Kim Junsu.
This is the story of that man, Kim Junsu.

# UNCOMMITTED

While transforming into a solo singer, just recently he decided to release an English single album. It has became such a hot topic as he worked with an international composer like Bruce Automatic. He experienced a working style which is completely different from the one in Korea. “While in our country, we tend to focus only on recording the song, in the US, they try to get to know each other first through conversations then go on with recording. If the recording time takes about 4 hours in total, 2 hours would be spent in having natural conversations about the album with each other. Also, I feel that they take care of the artist overwhelmingly well. If I want to rest, they would tell me to rest until whenever I want, they would make a big deal if my vocal condition is just a little bit unwell. Now I know what it is like to work with the best staff.”

He also worked with top staff to film a music video right in the US. He was confused with a whole new way of filming as they had to film the given situation in only one long-take. “In our country, the staff would definitely give directions even on the smallest movement but in the US, they just asked me to ‘sing like you are flirting with this woman’. Of course, they didn’t decide the exact movement for me either. Also, they always say ‘Action’ no matter what. We were told to caress each other right at the first time we met so I entrusted completely in the actresses. Seriously, like a fish being released into water, when the music is played, I must get everything under my control. When the filming started, I thought about what to do first. I felt the pressure but because of that, we had some natural unscripted scenes.” They brought a car to a desert, played the music and he was told to act there. Since it was the very first time he and the actress met, he couldn’t help but feeling puzzled when he was told to act like he is flirting with her. Even so, they completed the filming professionally. A high-standard music video was made. “Because every staff was looking at me only, somehow rather than feeling embarrassed, I just wanted to finish the filming quickly. Every staff that I worked with are popular people and it was also their first time to work with a Korean artist. Therefore, the responsibility of leaving a good image to them and the pressure to be good seem to be more severe. That’s how everything happened.”

# From a group to a solo

From a group of 5 members to a trio, then he transformed to a solo singer.
With that much happened, he was really worried and things are not easy for him at all. Especially in the situation where his TV activities aren’t guaranteed, the pressure on promotion for his solo album is big. The album was decided to be released after hesitating, therefore he wanted it to be in higher quality and be perfect. “Depending on how I set the standard for myself, it could be considered as a success or failure. At least, considering the worries I had in mind before releasing the album, I think it was such a big success to me. To be honest, when my agency first told me to release an album, I told them I didn’t want to. It is because I have thought that promoting an album when I can’t even appear on TV is impossible. On top of that, I did want to make an album with a certain quality that is enough to please me but if that amount of money was invested in but the result couldn’t meet our expectations then that would be just a daydream.” While preparing for the album, he also collaborated with Gecko, DoubleK etc. It seems like he is completing one by one things that he has never tried out before.

“There was a story like this long time ago. Every person has their own color in terms of music. No matter how differently they try to manifest, there is still a boundary that they cannot get over. I think collaboration is a way to break it. Now if I talk about what I want to do, my agency will accept the idea and get it prepared for me. That is what makes me happy the most.”

# ‘Unconventional’ transformation

Releasing an album at the end of agony was indeed unconventional.

He took back the name ‘XIA’ and chose an androgynous concept which he’s never shown before. The decision was more unexpected to come from a boyish person like him. “To be honest, it was awkward. For my personality, doing nails or dyeing my hair to bright color is something I’d never imagined myself would do in the past. I had absolutely no interest to the point that I felt ashamed that one can be called a celebrity just because of their fancy appearance. At that time, in my opinion, because I am a singer, all I must do is singing well and that’s it. I am that type of person who doesn’t go to dermatology ‘cos I found it annoying. That thought was broken when I participated in musical ‘Elisabeth’.”

Kim Junsu played the role of ‘Death’ in the musical ‘Elisabeth’. A mystical and transcendent character like that needs to have a completely different image from normal people. That was the reason why he started dieting. “I felt that I was so different from the role ‘Death’. If I was still active in TV broadcast activities, I would monitor and shape up my style even if no one told me to do so, but during the break, I felt that I had became too ‘loose’. The role ‘Death’ that I must manifest in the musical is sexy and has similar image to the God of Death. When I looked in the mirror, I realized that this was not ‘Death’, that I wouldn’t be able to immersed in the role in this state. I think my role must attract attention of the audience right when he appears on stage so in order to transform my image, I started dieting.”

After transforming himself into ‘Death’, Kim Junsu’s mind has also changed. “It is obvious that singing is the most important thing for a singer. However, I cannot deny the fact that showing appearance is also a part of this job. The visual element can’t have priority over singing but it cannot be overlooked either. I cared a lot about the visual aspect when preparing for this album. For that reason, I did my nails and these days, if I don’t have nail art, I feel weird. My mind has changed to that extent. To me, putting efforts to change, to transform myself is something I should do for the fans. Before, I’d never thought about using wigs but now it they are needed, I will definitely wear them.”

# Solo concert, Asia tour, then World tour

During a 90-minute solo concert, one can feel breathless just by watching him performing continuously intense dance songs.

While performing alone on stage, he has mastered both singing and performance abilities and received favorable comment from audiences.

“After finishing ‘TARANTALLEGRA’, I did think that it would be great if the next song ‘Fever’ wouldn’t start at all, or if the chair that I was sitting on would just be descended into the stage’s bottom. However, wanting to show a perfect image, I arranged dance songs continuously one after one so I gathered all my strength and focused on my stage. The delight and the sense of fulfillment after that are unbelievable.” Now he is starting his World tour. Standing on a foreign stage gives him very different feelings from those he has when being on domestic stage. Is it similar to what a national representative would feel? He doesn’t stop after obtaining popularity in Japan, he extended to Europe, South America etc. He has well prepared as XIA but also as a Korean singer, he has to bear a big responsibility to show a more than perfect stage. “To be honest, near the end, I was too tired that I didn’t know how I have performed in the song ‘Mission’. Also, when the concert has ended, not only I was happy but I also felt stunned. Nevertheless, after every concert, I always have some regrets and also emptiness in my heart, then I promise to myself that I will work even harder next time.”

# The daily life of a non-celebrity Kim Junsu

During the conversation with him, he has made me marvel at the serious worries a shining star has on stage, and also made me laugh at his unpolished carefree choice of words.  “I like to be with my friends. My house is our hangout. If I am home, B2ST Kikwang, Pro-gamer Yeom Bosung, Seokyungjong etc will just press the password for my house door and come in. I like noise so I always call my friends to come over. Kikwang often comes when he has time to rest. Because all of us don’t like drinking alcohol so if Kikwang, Doojoon, Jisuk hyung etc come, we go to Hanriver at night to play basketball.”

Currently being the captain of celebrities soccer team FC MEN, he is well-known as a big soccer maniac, to the extent that he said himself “If I was born again, I want to become a soccer player”. “I am not the type that shies away but because I have to stand on stage, I cannot play as much as I want but despite of that, I am not someone who would play half-heartedly. Therefore, during the concert period, if I tell the managers that I go playing soccer, they will be in emergency mode. Even so, I still play whole-heartedly.” In 2011, he participated in Park Jisung’s charity soccer match held in Vietnam and played side by side with other players. He participated in the match not because he wanted to play but thanks to Park Jisung’s encouragement, he didn’t want to miss the opportunity to run on the same field with Park Jisung. “I played for fun but Vietnamese players thought I was a player for real and kept tackling me. If I kept the ball, I would get into big trouble so I passed it. (laugh) I’ve thought that I couldn’t play in the match but Jisung hyung offered me the chance ‘Aren’t you like soccer too? Let’s play together’ so I got to play. Honestly, my physical condition on that day was really bad but will there ever have another chance like that again, so I pretended to be okay and participated in. The national team’s manager even came to see my physical condition.”

# Go beyond an idol to become a musical actor

His ticket power is famous in the musical industry. There is a hearsay that trying to get ticket for his shows is like going through a real ‘ticket war’. With such exceptional ticket power and ability, he has became a top musical star. “Tickets were expensive yet all the seats were filled up. I am really thankful for that. Therefore, I cannot perform carelessly. I might have not met 100% of their expectations but at least, I just don’t want to hear that idol singers just rely on their popularity to enter the musical industry and stand on public stage. As a result, I’ve worked hard while carrying a sense of duty. Of course, I will work even harder in the future.” In fact, there are many different opinions over the advance into musical industry of idol singers.

Some might think that considering his popularity, it was easy for him to get casted, and also in order to selling tickets, there was no doubt that the producer would choose him. To overcome such opinions, he gritted his teeth harder. Still, he has also experienced the prejudice against idol. “I have to complete everything more perfectly in order to break that prejudice. Of course, there were many pressures. I also knew the fact that if the musical was ruined because of my fault, all the arrows would point at me. I can’t help but being more cautious and in every show, I don’t allow even the smallest mistake to happen. Nevertheless, I still felt so many prejudices. If I am off-key, there will be response like ‘See, this is why we can’t accept idol’. Still, I also know that there’s no other way than endure and let it go. That is because I know it is my job to change that kind of perception little by little.” As a result, all evaluations about Kim Junsu are now positive.

At ‘The Musical Awards’, he was honored to receive the popularity award for 3 consecutive years and be nominated for Best Actor award for 2 consecutive years. The feeling of being at a musical awards ceremony is very different from a music awards ceremony.

“At a music awards ceremony, I would be considered as a sunbae but at a musical awards ceremony, I am the maknae among maknaes.  All the actors treat me well and nicely so I can do nothing but be grateful for that. I also feel alienated a bit but everyone is so nice to me. I have nothing to be ashamed of when being in this position. I hate the perception that I can sit at this position solely because of my popularity so I will work harder.”

# After debuting 9 years ago, I am still in the middle of growing just like before

This is already the 9th year since his debut. Many things happened but now he feels that he is clearly drawing out the path that he must walk through. “No matter what I do, I will always think carefully first then do it. I will think thoroughly about the picture of myself, the big picture of JYJ and decide on how I should do it.  I have learnt a big lesson by comparing this time, this moment with the past. When looking at the final result, the joy is as big as the hard time I felt during preparation period. Now I don’t like anyone to order me to do this and that. That is not me but it is just a person who is well wrapped by someone else. Of course, packaging is also an art but I would like to build up my own perfect confidence rather than being under that shell.  An artist needs to have his own thinking, his own color. Other members also feel happy when they do something by themselves and enjoy its fulfillment.” Advice he wants to give to the hoobaes is also in the same context. One cannot do everything 100% on their own but if they trust and communicate with their agency, they will become artist who never looses their own thinking. “It is not about doing everything the agency asks for blindly, it would be better to become an artist that can put his own justification in his works and speak up his mind. No matter if the agency is the one who decides the concept or not, we also have to fairly express our own opinion about the work. Undoubtedly, doing merely as what you say yourself is dangerous. Collecting opinion of people around is also important. I think if they can become an artist like that, they will find their own color inside of them and also develop their competitive power”. Challenging and building up his own self are what he enjoys the most these days. Building up one’s self is not something that can be done by one-sided communication. It is walking together with the staff toward the direction you want through mutual communication. He said that the failure he experiences on that road might cause him bigger risk than before but even so, he has no regrets. “Pressure and responsibility are one of the pleasures I am feeling right now. There is always crossroad and turning point. I want to make that turning point on my own. I still don’t know if I will succeed or fail but first of all, I won’t have any regret when doing what I want.  I will find the common point between what I think and opinions of the staff then go forward in the future. Also, through all of that, I want to create mutual trust and happiness.”

#Editor’s note – Thanks XIA!

On a rainy day August 22,  I’ve met Kim Junsu on the elegant Kyeongridan street. Before starting the outdoor photoshoot, in contrast with the gloomy look of the editor because the rain showed no sign of stopping, Junsu stepped into the photoshoot location with cheerful expression on his face. The concept for @star1 October issue’s photoshoot was named ‘Dandy & Wild’, inpired by Junsu’s two-sided charm. As the photoshoot must show 2 kinds of concept at once, we had a hard time not only fixing his clothes but also modifying the hair and make-up However, in this photoshoot that also made him feel tired, unexpectedly, as if he tried to removed the staff’s fatigue, he cracked jokes, pulled pranks and cheered up the atmosphere.

During the photoshoot, he discovered a piano at a corner. As if he was waiting for that moment, he started playing a sweet melody, then in the middle of that, he tilted his head and started singing along. If he has time, he will hum along a song, and he never realizes time has passed by when he starts talking about music. There is no need for any explanations to feel how much he loves music. “In daily life, I also believe in the power of positive thinking. Therefore, I always try my best to think positively. The rain is going to stop when our outdoor photoshoot starts.” Just as Junsu said, no, as if Junsu’s request has reached the sky, just about time when the indoor photoshoot ended, the rain really stopped and the bright sun shined down on us.

All the staff looked at Junsu and exclaimed in delight. We were able to finish the photoshoot on the street really quickly. Thanks to him, we were able to complete the photoshoot much much better than we expected. To Junsu who must have felt really tired because of the busy schedules in both domestic and overseas after releasing the album single but still did his best, also to the staff that helped me to wrap up the outdoor photoshoot quickly, I want to take this chance to say thank you to everyone. Thank you! Junsu!

An Interview with Junsu at NYC Press Conference : part 1

Q. What do you feel about completing asia tour and starting world tour?

A. I’ve toured Asia many times but, as a solo, this was my first Asian tour. At the beginning there were many worries and apprehensions. Having performance at the Hong Kong concert, I recalled the time when I first took courage. Since TV activities are impossible it is quite burdonsome to release no single but a regular album and to release an album for holding concerts. Amid many worries, I mustered up courage, released the album, and received more love than expected. Rather than saying concerts were fruitful, I think it was an opportunity for me to see small hope and light for the future. The year 2012 is dreamlike, and meaningful to me. During the worldwide tour starting in New York, I will do my best with a sense of responsibility that I will hold concerts in U.S. and South America as a representative of Korea and Asia.

Q. You will sing musical numbers at NY concert. What musical did you watch yesterday?

A. The musical numbers I’m gonna sing are originally German but I will sing it in Korean. Yesterday I watched the musical Spiderman for the first time in U.S. Very splendid.

Q. You changed your hair color for each country during Asia tour

A. Many dissuaded me and I also felt changing hair-color was very hard for me, but I did by force of mind. After changing color for 2 countries, I thought if I gave up changing it, it might be seemed less sincere. By will that I’ll do my best for every country, I dyed my hair with color that represents each country, and it was interesting. During Asian tour concerts, filming was kept proceeded and if I see the color of my hair I can tell in which country I had that concert. In China it was red, in Indonesia blue, in Hongkong purple, in Thailand yellow. Due to frequent dyeing my hair becomes so shorter that I use hair treatment now. Haha.

Q. Worldwide tour is right following your Asia tour. Do you have any problem with your physical condition?

A. No problem. Compared with the previous time, I can afford to well manage my schedule. And the 1st Asian tour made me accustomed to such tight schedule. Time difference is a little bit worrisome but two hours at concert is okay..

Q. Did members of JYJ give support for your worldwide tour?

A. They congratulated me. We always support and congratulate each other whenever a member engages in drama, musical, or concert. I’m deeply grateful to the two.

Q. In the MV of your single, your image is a boy who plays well with girl models.

A. The MV isn’t a kind of having a full-story, but image cuts and drama cuts are mixing well. It was interesting to act as a bad boy. It was first time to work with local director of U.S., and all staff members were American. At first it was hard for me to do acting with American actresses. Yet Staff wanted me to freely express so that they let me act freely and intermittently gave me advice. They worked so good in film-cutting. There won’t be such dramatic factors on the stage (at concerts) but there will be choreography that is suitable for R&B tempo because ‘Uncommitted’ is kind of Urban Pop.

Q. You did great job in using featering in Uncommitted. Have you ever thought about collaboration?

A. At first I didn’t want to change the guide. If too much Korean factors were included in the song, it may lead to deviation from the very original intention of releasing an album. I made an attempt to discard my own style of singing this time. I liked voice of composer Automatic so that I’d like to use his voice in rap and narration in order to make an ideal song. I sang in a manner of relaxing, not being too heavy but light and rhythmical since Uncommitted is not only a ballad song but also a rhythmical one. At the time I sang it with enjoyment and with no head-set but a microphone right in my hand in order to give listeners a sense of listening live music. I can say Tarantallegra is a song to show and Uncommitted is a song to listen.

Q. The record of album sales is good, and you are the 1st Korean male solo to have worldwide tour from Asia to America and Europe.
A. It’s really burdonsome for me to do by myself. When chief of my agency mentioned a worldwide tour including South America and Europe with my solo album, I worried a lot. And, coupled with worry about whether to act in drama, the last year was a year of dilemma for me. In order to appear on TV, I have to perform in drama. Yet, I have more confidence in singing and dancing on the stage. I had so many thoughts and I had my own pride. If I choose releasing an album, I want to release a better one. But I couldn’t be sure whether investing in an album is good or not. The agency said it would invest but It was me who worried about it. I wanted to do good job but if my solo activities ends with no one recognizing my album is released, then it’s better not to release the album.
During preparation for the musical Elizabeth, chief of my agency brought me a role of hero in drama and we had talks. What I had to decide is to appear in drama or not but, suddenly, I took a notion of trying to make my album, to take on the challenge. Singing is most confidently my strongest point so that I wanna do what I’m confident in, and, members of jyj have been doing well in drama activities so that it’s harder for me to engage in. I asked the chief whether I could make an album and told him I would make an attempt though it may end in failure. Now is the time in which the broadcast can no longer control all and people around the world can have an easy access to contents on the Internet sites like YOutube. So, I thought that the situation is not such desperate as that of the previous time. At first I told him the concept of MV. Though I release an album, I can’t show my contents through broadcast or live stage. That is why I told him I had to bank on MV. I’m grateful to the agency who gave support as mentioned and pleased with the good result.

Kim Junsu “The First Korean Singer Who is to Hold a Concert in Mexico – I’m Honored”

im Junsu “The First Korean Singer Who is to Hold a Concert in Mexico – I’m Honored”

Q. You are the 1st Korean singer to hold a concert in Mexico.

A. This is my first visit to Mexico and I’m so pleased to hold a concert. Though it’s the 1st, I’m very honored to hear that more than 3000 fans would come to my concert. When I heard I would hold a concert in Mexico, I came to think again that now K-pop is worldwide known. In return for Mexican fans’ support, I hope to show a great performance.

Q. You had concerts as a member of JYJ in Chile and Peru, and now in Mexico. It’s said you’re especially popular in Mid- and South America.

A. Really? Haha. Fans from Mid and South America are especially passionate. I’m the most active member in JYJ so they might think so. Well, each country has its own preference for style of songs of mine or JYJ. Americans respond most actively to club-dance music. Japaneses prefer sad ballad songs, Asians like dance music with gorgeous performance. Europeans seems to have diverse preference.

Q. During worldwide tour, what comes in your mind?

A. This year my flight milage is accumulated to reach as many as 500,000 miles. Following a concert in Mexico, I’ll have a concert in Brazil. Yet, it was unbelievable even to me that I could hold concerts here. Indeed, it was the same when I had concerts as a member of JYJ in Spain, Germany, Chile, and Peru. I know the power of K-pop and I came to think I should try harder and harder in order not damage the K-pop boom which was born among benign competition of Korean singers and have a sense of responsibility.

Q. Last May you released the 1st solo album and Last August the english single Uncommitted, and now you’re on the worldwide tour. How do you feel about?

A. In light that I couldn’t do regular activities or promotion via media even though I released an album, I had a negative thought about releasing my solo album in the beginning. Thus, I planed to do drama activities and actually decided a role of mini-series drama. Yet what I wanted to do most is music, and I thought it’s right to release an album first before the appearance in drama in response to fans who have waited for me. And, I thought now is the time in which TV promotion is not the only one. So, after careful consideration I gave up to appear in drama and released a solo album and an english single for international fans in August.

Considering that the solo album has received much love and now I can have a worldwide tour, it was a great decision to release the album. This year is the year of hope to me.

Q. Did the worldwide tour after releasing the solo album make any difference to you?

A. When I do activities as a singer my mindset becomes different from when I perform as a musical actor. Likewise, I should show different music during my solo activity from that of JYJ. I made some differences in sessions and make-up and I’m trying to be more confidently and actively during talk time in concerts. During concerts of JYJ, it’s members who lead talk time, but, during my solo concert, I meet the audience alone. And having concerts after my solo album shapes my view over music again. In addition, I thought I have to avoid ordinary concept and now I’m trying to show performance much more than before.

Q. Do members of JYJ give any support to you?

A. not only during worldwide tour but also on usual days we asked each other “are you ok? (or is it hard?).” All members are now in hard time but we are happy. We are good supporters to each other. I’m very proud of my members. And we are making efforts to constantly show various activities.

Q. In the latest concert in L.A. you danced a horse dance of Gangnam Style.

A. At the time all fans there shouted “Gangnam Style” as if they promised to do so. So, I danced it twice. All the audience asked me, so, I couldn’t help daincing. Haha.

Q. What is different after performing in the musical plays?

A. It was the first time I did acting. I was intoxicated in the role and show performance I couldn’t imagine previously. Musical activities dispel my fear about change and transformation. This helped me do try dramatical change when I started my solo activities. The musical also gives me inspiration. During “Mozart!,” I wrote the song “Fallen Leaves,” and, “Elizabeth” inspired to the song “Tarantallegra.” I’m happy because I can experience both stages of musical plays and singer. If I can well balance between the two parts, I think that will be helpful to me.

Q. What image of idol do you want to be remembered as?

A. though I’m an idol singer, I want to show my music is outstanding. And the members of JYJ compose their own songs in order to put this idea into practice.

Q. You might be lonely to do such tight schedule. Do you want to have a girlfriend?

A. I always think it may be good to have a girl freind. I have no ideal type in terms of her look but have ideal type of polite and girlish girl in terms of personality. I’ve had girl friends before but not now. And if I have a girl friend now, I suppose she’s gonna spurn me right now. Haha.

Q. What’s your plan after the worldwide tour ends?

A. First, I want to take rest. Haha. I think I can take rest in happiness of completing the worldwide tour well. This worldwide tour is giving me a large amount of energy. I’ve yet decided what to do after the worldwide tour – to release an album or to appear in a drama or in a musical play. No matter what I choose I’m sure that will give me great energy.

[Vid+Trans] 120830 Xia Junsu Interview in Hong Kong

[Vid+Trans] 120830 Xia Junsu Interview in Hong Kong

Host: We’re glad to have JYJ’s Kim Junsu with us today. Annyonghaseyo.

Junsu: Annyonghaseyo. Da Jia Hao. (T/N: “Hi Everyone”, in Chinese)

Host: I know that this time is the first time you are here on your own for a concert. Do you feel nervous without your brothers with you?

Junsu: Compared to three people, it’s a bit lonely after all. But as it is already the last stop of the Asia tour, I am more adapted to it and more at ease with performing for everyone. To be able to spend enjoyable time with everyone, I am very excited and happy.

Host: I know that in this album, other than showing your toned body , you also dressed up as a girl. Jaejoong himself dressed up as a girl before, so between you two, who do you think is prettier?

Junsu: *laughs* To say who is prettier, this is a bit difficult. Even when looking at girls, they have different styles too. I think we brought out different styles with our own way. But if were to say prettiness, I will say it’s Jaejoong.

Host: JYJ members sometimes uploaded comical photos online. Who is the most playful among you three?

Junsu: Playful… I think all three of us are playful. From what I think, I think the two of them are more playful than me. Like… Jaejoong’s playfulness is more towards actions while Yoochun likes to talk funnily. When I’m with the two of them, I am very happy and became filled with happiness. My laughters became more. Furthermore when I’m with the members, I think my comical side becomes more obvious. Therefore whenever the three of us are together, the laughters never stop. Yup.

Commentary: In fact JYJ had their serious side too. Jaejoong wrote a song for Junsu which made Junsu very satisfied.

Junsu: First and foremost, the songs that I had received from members are not sang together but for my own. It really has a different feeling. Such a feeling… And also to able to digest the song that I received well, and to put it in my own album, I am really very happy. Jaejoong is also very happy that he wrote for me. As members know each other very well, thus he was able to write songs that is suitable for the other party. To receive such a good song, I am really thankful to Jaejoong.

Host: Your twin brother also wrote lyrics for you this time. Do you find it special?

Junsu: For ‘Tarantallegra’, it’s my first time composing and arranging. When I was writing the lyrics, as my brother who have wrote ‘Mission’ before, he has good touch towards dance numbers. Thus I asked him for his help to inject new ideas or try to write the lyrics. One day he asked me about the meaning of the word, ‘Tarantallegra’. It was the meaning of a curse to make people dance. He asked me how about using the word for the lyrics and I said that it’s good. Seeing my brother who worked so hard writing such a suitable lyrics among the new genres for me, I am also grateful towards my brother and will let him be in charge of it in future.

Commentary: Would Junsu like to venture into dramas like his two members?

Junsu: I think that I might meet everyone in a drama one day. As for when will that be, I am really not sure. I really don’t know regarding this. When I am filming drama, I will be well-prepared for it. If there is a suitable script, no matter when, everyone will have the chance to see me on TV.

Host: Is there anything you would like to say to Hongkong fans?

Junsu: Words to Hongkong fans…. They don’t mind that I’m not able to meet them frequently. As long as I’m here, they would welcome me warmly. The love that everyone gave me, I am very grateful too. Really thank you. Whenever it is, I love you all. ‘I love everyone’ (T/N: in Cantonese) ‘I love everyone’ (T/N: in Korean)

Host: Thank you Junsu for being here.

Junsu: Thank you. ‘Thank you’. (T/N: in Chinese)

120826 World-class vocalist, XIA Junsu’s recommended music

XIAworld

120826 World-class vocalist, XIA Junsu’s recommended music

Hello, Cyworld members!
I am XIA, greeting everyone through my official solo album and English single.
Nice to meet you.

1. This time, TARANTALLEGRA is a song that you personallly composed and I was very surprised at its fairly high quality. Since when have you started composing songs? – Gwon Gooyoung

Firstly, the musical aspect of this song is also important but because I pictured out the visual aspect first then composed it, I worked on both composition and filming for the music video at the same time. Besides, the music video was released 1 day before the song itself so I have to work harder on the visual aspect like choreography and fashion etc to make the song even better.

I think I started composing when I was 20. I learnt about the basics of composition and naturally strengthened my skills as what I felt and learnt by myself along the way. At the moment, I still want to learn more about this and also compose more songs.

2. I am curious whether you got the inspirations from which circumstance while composing. From natural scene? Your everyday life? Or, did they just suddenly come to you? -@shiningspot

Everything around me, also everything that happened to me is my inspiration.
If a melody or a beat pops up in my head, I will run to the composing room right away to compose and keep them there. The title song of my solo album was inspired a lot by the role ‘Death’ in musical Elisabeth in terms of its mystical and androgynous vibe.

3. When did you have the idea of adding the sound of gong instrument into the Oriental version of TARANTALLEGRA? Also, is the high-pitched part at the end your ad-lib? -@wnstn4803

It is because TARANTALLEGRA is a song where orchestra was grafted onto pop. Ever since its music was finished, I have thought that if I get to make a remix for my repackage album later on, I will make use of gong instrument in order to revive a Korean sense, and also an Oriental feeling for the song.

When I was young, I have learnt how to play Samul nori like Jang-gu, Buk and Gong. To be honest, because it is an English version, I planned to put aside the idea of adding the sound of traditional instruments but after recording the song, it came to my mind that they would match even better with an English song like this so I decided to add the sound of gong into the record. The reason why I add the ad-lib part at the end is because I want to put the fantasy and oriental sense of the song to the extreme. Imagining about that feeling in my mind, I naturally added in my ad-lib while singing.

(T/N: Samul nori is 4 traditional musical instruments of Korea, including Jang-gu, Buk, KKaeng-kwa-ri and Jing )

4. Is there any interesting episode when you recorded for this album? -@peach_xia

I already felt this when working on the worldwide album last time, I felt really carefree when recording. Because the composer respects the artist and respects his feelings 120%, I feel great when working. It is also the same at the recording time. This time when I was singing, I choked a little bit and started coughing, the composer Automatic told me that I could to have a rest until whenever I wanted and asked me to have a cup of warm tea then continue, etc he cared about me so much that I didn’t even know how to react. It was a nice time working with him.

5. Which music genre do you want to try in the future? To be honest, do you feel the most confident in any area? -@mim-ee

Honestly, rather than talking about which genre I want to try, everything is considered as challenge to me. I think that in music, the desire to always take on new challenge is very important. Rather than dividing the songs into different genre, I want to sing well every song. For the upcoming World tour, instead of a repackage album, I asked for English song and went to the US to work on my English single then released it. To me, processes like these are also considered as one kind of challenge.

6. If you get to have a duet, please tell us who are the BEST 3 female singers that you definitely want to work with and also why you choose them!

Honestly, I want to work with a lot of singers since there are a lot of excellent singers who can convey endless of  feelings through their voice. I just hope that in the duet song that we sing, our voice would go well with each other and create a crossover effect. Hmm…If I really have to choose then

3rd is Lyn-noona who owns such a beautiful voice.
Then, 2nd is Baek Jiyoung-sunbaenim. I like every OST song that sunbaenim has sung.
1st is Lee Sora-sunbaenim. I felt really honored that sunbaenim has said she wanted to have a duet with me in an article a while ago and I was very impressed when I saw sunbaenim on ‘I am a singer’.

7. Because you have changed your hair color so often when traveling around for your Asia tour, it has become a hot topic among the fans. Why did you change your hair color that often? Also, which hair color do you like the most? -@bbiyoxiah

Because this is my first solo tour so I have to be well prepared and every single city in the tour is equally important. For every concert, I want to see it as a new start and do my best so I changed my hair color. Plus, because of the different color image of each country, I chose my hair color as a part of fan service. As a result, I dyed my hair to yellow for Thailand, blue for Indonesia and Taiwan, red for Shanghai.

8. For the first time in history, all seats in the Sejong Center were sold out (until now, XIA Junsu is still the only one who can do that). Whenever you perform musical, the seats will be all sold out. I think you feel very different at the curatin call when looking at the full audience. I am curious of how you feel ^^! -@For_XIA

I feel thankful. It seems that I became an extreme perfectionist because of this. I have to do as best as I can on every stage. When performing, I couldn’t see the audience but at the curtain call when I saw the whole audience very clearly, I felt so happy and grateful that tears flowed from my eyes.

Big applause from the audiences who watched a performance where all actors and staff have put in their best, then they cried and laughed with us. That is something that makes me feel so happy and thankful that I cannot express in words. And that  naturally gives me motivation to do even better in the next performance.

9. Beside JYJ members, can you list some celebrities that you are close with? I am curious of XIA Junsu’s circle of friends!

I separate them into two big groups. Friends in the entertainment industry, gamers, the ones in my FC MEN team and the sunbaenims in musical industry.

I am close with Kikwang, Doojoon, Jisuk-sunbae, Hyunjoong and Sungkwang-hyung.
I often contact and hang out with some musical sunbaenims like Jo Seungwoo hyung, Seonah-noona, Park Gunhyung-sunbae, Joohyun-noona, Min Younggi-sunbaenim etc.

10. 10 years, 20 years later, what kind of artist will XIA Junsu become? Or, how do you want yourself to be in the future? Like, I think I will still continue to sing this kind of music, or It will be great if everyone always remembers me as such singer..However you want to be! -@XIA_nolene

I don’t think 10 years are too far away. In fact, I think of that as a near future. Of course, I will still take on some challenges 10 years later. Since I will never ever stop challenging myself. I hope I will become an artist in his late 30s that ages nicely. I absolutely don’t have the thought of still being a popular singer until then. Rather than that, it will be great if up to that moment, I am still not afraid of taking on challenges, still love music, still do my best on stage and also I hope to become a Kim Junsu who will get to know more about life and get wiser with age.

XIA Junsu’s recommended BGM

1. 5 songs that recently XIA Junsu has been listening to the most

1st: Gangnam style – Psy
I definitely listen to Psy hyung’s hit song very often recently.

2nd: Beautiful night – BEAST
BEAST dongsaengs’ song :-)

3rd: Cherry blossom ending – Busker Busker
A simple song

4th: Love is dripping – 10cm

5th: So sick – Neyo

Honestly speaking, I don’t listen to any specific song or singer. The songs I listen to are random so it seems like I don’t have such thought like I must definitely recommend the song of this singer. There are times that I listen to a lot of pop songs but when I worked on my song in USA, I also listened to a lot of hip-hop and R&B. To be honest, the song that I listen to the most is my own song. In order to monitor the songs in my released album, I listen to them a lot throughout 1-2 weeks.

2. The song that brings comfort to you when you feel tired and troubled in life or the song that has a deep meaning in your life

Why can’t you love me – Park Euntae (Musical Mozart)
Golden star – Shin Youngsook (Musical Mozart)

All these 2 songs are from the musical Mozart. They are the ones that gave me a lot of comfort.

3. If you have lover, the BEST 3 songs that you want to sing to her

1st: Lullaby – Junsu (XIA)
2nd: That man – Baek Jiyoung
3rd: I love you – Tim

If I have a lover, I will want to sing a lot of sweet songs for her. This song is not in Cyworld Music but I really like the song ‘I have never loved like this’ from the musical ‘Tears of heaven’.

4. Among the songs that you have sung so far, which are the BEST 5 songs that you cherish the most:

1st: Fallen leaves – JYJ
2nd: You are so beautiful – XIA
3rd: TARANTALLEGRA – XIA
4th: I dislike love – XIA
5th: Dew-laden tree – XIA

[Trans] 120826 XIA Junsu Cyworld Music Interview

World Vocalist Junsu(XIA)’s Recommended Music

1. Tarantallegra is a song you made yourself, and I was very surprised at the high quality. When did you start making songs?
First, the musical part was important too, but because the visual image was prior to the composing for this song, thoughts about the composition and the music video went on at the same time.
That’s the reason why the music video was released a day before the song. It is a song that stands out more with the visual images such as choreography and fashion than the song itself.
I think I started making songs when I was 20 years old. I learned the basic composing and improved by feeling and learning myself.
I still want to learn more and make many more songs.

2. I’m curious usually what are you inspired by when you compose. Scenery? Episodes from your real life? Or does it just comes to you?
Everything around me, and everything that happens is my inpiration.
When a melody or a beat comes to me, I tend to run to my studio immediately, make it, and save it.
I was inpired by the Death(Tod) from Elizabeth for the title song of my first album. The mysterious, epicene feeling.
3. When did you think of putting the sound of kkwaenggari in Tarantallegra? And are the high-notes at the last part an ad-lib?
(I thought of putting the sound of kkwanggari in) Because Tarantallegra is a pop song combined with an orchestra.
From the very start of making the song I thought of adding the Korean, Oriental feeling by making use of the kkwaenggari if I get to make an remix for a repackage album.
I learned samulnori(T/N: Korean traditional quartet) such as Janggu, drum, and kkwaenggari since I was young.
To be honest, becuase it was an English version I was going to give up putting in the kkwaenggari sounds, but as I was recording the song I got to think maybe it would go better with the English version. So I decided to record the kkwaenggari sounds.
The ad-lib at the last part is also an effect to maximize the dreamlike, Oriental feeling.
As I was singing while imagining those feelings the ad-lib came out naturally.
4. Was there an interesting episode during the recording?
I also felt it during the recording of the Worldwide album that it is very free.
Because the composer respects the artist and the feeling the artist has for 120%, recording is so pleasant.
This time I choked and coughed a bit when I was singing, and the composer ‘Automatic’ treated me so nicely by saying you can rest as much as you want or would you have a cup of warm tea and try again, that I didn’t know what to do.
It was pleasant to work with them.
5. Is there a genre of music you want to challenge in the future? Is there a genre you are most confident in?!
To tell the truth, it’s more like everything is a challenge than a particular genre.
I think the attitude of challenging always is most important for music. I want to do a good job in every songs than dividing genres.
Like the process of re-creating a song into an English version instead of a repackage for a world tour, and releasing a single recorded in the U.S. was another challenge for me.
6. Please tell us the Best 3 female singers you really want to do a duet with, and why!
To be honest there are very many, since there are so many singers that delivers a limitless feelings just with their voice.
I think just doing a duet with another singer may give a crossover-like feeling as our voices meet together.
Hmm..if I must choose
the 3rd is Lynn noona with a beautiful voice.
And the 2nd is Baek Jiyoung sunbae-nim.
I really like all OSTs sunbae-nim sang.
The 1st is Lee Sora sunbae-nim.
She said she would like to duet with me through an artical last time.
It is such an honor and I was very moved when she was on I am a Singer.
7. You changed your hair color very frequently during the worldtour which became an issue among the fans.
Why did you change your hair color so often? Which color did you like the best?
I changed the color often since it was my first solo tour so I was extremely determined, every concert in different cities were precious. And I had an attitude that I should do my best because every performance is a new start.
As a fan service I chose the color considering the image of each country.
So Thailand was yellow, Indonesia and Taiwan was blue, and Shanghai was red.
8. Including the first Sejong center sold-out in history (Xia Junsu is still the only one), every musical you do is sold-out.
I think it must feel extraordinary when looking at the full house during the curtain call. I’m curious how it feels^^!
I feel thankful of course. I think that’s why I become a perfectionist even more.
I think I should show my best on every stage.
I can’t see the audience when I’m acting, but when the performance is over and I look at the brightly lit up seats, I’m so happy and thankful that I feel like I’ll cry.
The warm applause from the audience who laughed and cried and joined us during the performance that all actors and staffs put their best effort into.
I feel unspeakably thankful and happy. It naturally becomes a motivation for the next performance.
9. Which stars would you say are the closest friends execpt for JYJ? I’m curious about Xia Junsu’s personal connections!
I can divide it generally into two.
Friends who are entertainers and gamers from the soccer team FC MEN, and musical sunbae-nims.
I’m close to Kikwang, Doojun, Jisuk sumbae, Hyunjung, Sungkwang hyung,
and I keep in touch with Jo Sengwoo hyung, Sunah noona, Park Gunhyung sunbae, Joohyun noona, Min Youngki sunbae from the musicals.
10. What artist do you think you’ll be after 10, 20 years?
Or the future self you want to be? For example, I think I would be doing this kind of music or I want to be remembered as this kind of a singer..
Anything!
10 years later doesn’t seem very far to me. I actually think it is a close future.
And of course I will be challenging something. Since I’m not going to stop chanllenging for my whole life.
I would like to be an artist in my late thirties, growing old nicely.
I not in the least wish to be a popular artist till then. Instead I want to be Kim Junsu, still not afraid of challenging, a person that loves music, someone who does his best on the stage, and a man who got to know more about life and is growing old nicely.
Xia Junsu’s Recommended BGM
1. Songs that Xia Junsu listens to the most these days (5 songs)
1st : Kangnam Style – Psy
These days of course I listen to Psy hyung’s song which is the trend
2nd : It’s a beautiful Night – Beast
Song of Beast dongsangduls. (T/N: younger brothers)
3rd : Cherry Blossoms Ending – Busker Busker
A light song
4th : Love Forms a Drop – 10cm
5th : So Sick – Ne-yo
To tell the truth I don’t think of singers or songs when I listen to music.
Since I listen to a lot of songs randomly, I don’t think there’s a ‘I recommend this song without question.’
Sometimes I listen to K-pop more and when I was recording in the U.S. I listened to Hiphop and R&B.
To be honest the song I listen to the most is my own song. After the release of the album, I listen to it from 1 to 2 weeks to monitor it.
2. Songs that gave comfort when you were going through the most difficult time of your life, or songs that are meaningful to you
Why don’t you love me – Park Euntae (Musical Mozart)
Gold Star – Shin Youghsuk (Musical Mozart)
These are both songs from Musical Mozart. I was comforted much by these two songs.
3. Best 3 songs you want to sing to your lover
1st : Lullaby – Junsu(XIA)
2nd : That Man – Baek Jiyoung
3rd : I Love You – Tim
When I have a lover I want to sing a lot of sweet songs for her.
Cyworld music doesn’t have it but ‘I’ve never loved like this’ from Tears of Heaven is also good.
4. Best 5 songs you cherish the most among songs you participated in till now
1st : Fallen Leaves – JYJ
2nd : You are So Beautiful – XIA
3rd : Tarantallegra – XIA
4th : Dislike Love – XIA
5th : Dew-Laden Tree – XIA

120826 Kim Junsu “I won’t stop taking on challenge under the name of XIA”

credit : XIAworld

“World star Kim Junsu (XIA) has arrived.”

Yesterday, at 4pm local time, as soon as Kim Junsu (XIA) entered Hong Kong Renaissance Conference room, over 150 news reporters and photographers that were wating for him stood up all at once and pointed their flashing cameras toward the entrance.

In a press conference with participation of 50-60 major mass media outlets in Hongkong like Myungbo newspaper, Eastern Daily and TVB, the reporters asked the singer about the release of his latest English single album and his feelings when coming to Hong Kong for the finale of his Asia Tour.

Kim Junsu said “When I first started my solo activities, I hesitated due to many restrictions but while releasing the album and starting my tour, I gained back a lot of confidence along the way and I am happy to hold my Asia tour’s finale in Hong Kong. I am excited at the thought of watching the beautiful night view of Hong Kong. As soon as I came here, I feel that this is a friendlly city and so many fans have also come here for me so I want to thank everyone for that.”

Kim Junsu also talked about the reason of releasing his English single “Before starting the World tour, I want to give all of my fans around the world a gift so I came to the US and worked together with a great composer Automatic for the song ‘UNCOMMITTED’.”

Then, “I chose to sing in English because it is the language that all fans around the world can understand the most and I also think that when I sing this R&B urban-pop song originally in English, the feelings will be able to revive much better so I gave it a try.” He also added “I want to continuously and wholeheartedly take on challenge as an artist under the name XIA.”

During the conference, reporters listened carefully to what Kim Junsu said and when he expressed his good impression for Hong Kong, the conference room was filled with laughter and harmonious atmosphere.

Besides, the media reporters in Hong Kong are also good at Korean language. According to C-JeS Entertainment, “When Hong Kong reporters handed in their business card, they all greated us in Korean. During the phototime of Kim Junsu, they also called him in Korean ‘Here. Please look here’. Because the media heard that the degree of perfection of Kim Junsu’s Asia tour is high, they also put more interests in the concert.”

Kim Junsu made his resolution “I will give my best at my Asia tour’s finale and present everyone with an excellent performance.” Kim Junsu’s ‘XIA 1st Asia tour in Hong Kong’ concert will be held at Hong Kong Convention center at 9pm KST on August 26.

JYJ’s Jun Su recently said he won’t stop challenging as XIA.”

On August 26, C-Jes Entertainment, Jun Su’s agency, reported that Jun Su said, “I hesitated to release a solo album at first because of many bad conditions, but I gained confidence while I was on a world tour after releasing a solo album,” in a press interview, which was held at the Renaissance Conference Room in Hong Kong on August 25 at 4:00 p.m. (local time).

Regarding his new single recorded in English, Jun Su said, “Before going on a world tour, I wanted to give a special gift to my fans all around the world, so I made “Uncommitted” with the famous American composer Automatic. Because English is a global language, I chose to sing the song in English, but this R&B urban pop song sounds better in English.”

Jun Su also said, “I won’t stop challenging as XIA.”

Regarding his visit to Hong Kong, Jun Su said, “I was excited to see the beautiful night view of Hong Kong. Hong Kong is a very friendly city, and I thank you so much for coming to see me. I’m so happy to hold the last concert of my Asian tour in Hong Kong.”

Around 50 to 60 media sources in Hong Kong, such major newspapers and TV stations as Myung Bo Newspaper, Dong Bang Daily News Paper, and TVB, attended the press interview. The reporters listened to every word of Jun Su carefully. When Jun Su expressed his affection for Hong Kong, the interview room was filled with laughs.

[Trans] Interview of Sylvester Levay with NewsWave in Korea

[Trans] Interview of Sylvester Levay with NewsWave in Korea

Interview of Sylvester Levay with NewsWave in Korea

** Mr. Levay is a original composer of <Mozart!> and <Elizabeth>

This is a forth visit to korea for Mr. Levay, and there’s a special bond with him and this country. Kim Junsu is one of those specials, who played the lead on works of Levay in a row. He took a title role in <Mozart!>, and currently casts as ‘Tod’ in <Elizabeth>.

Mr. Levay raved about the performance of this rising star. “Junsu is at one with the character on the stage.” Then, he talked about their first meeting with a bright face.

“I met Junsu in the opening of <Mozart!> for the first time. He was so friendly and such a sweetheart as now. Thankfully, Junsu told me that he was fascinated by my music. Since that day, we’ve got to be friends. I’ve watched the process of his growth as an actor for the last 2 years. Junsu isn’t overawed by a character to be but is assimilated so naturally, and I respect that tremendously. Especially in the case of <Mozart!>, there are many similarities between the protagonist and Junsu himself. This point had a strong influence on his heartful performance, I guess.”

For Mr. Levay, ‘Tod’ is a special character. The allegory of Tod as god of death has its long own history. This deep-rooted traditional character was adapted for <Elizabeth>, and lend a fantastic atmosphere to the play.

Mr. Levay responded to a question about the performance of Junsu as ‘Tod’.

“As you know, ‘Tod’ is utterly different from ‘Mozart’. And I was very impressed with his acting to go into this new character when I saw him in rehearsals. Actually, I changed my departure schedule for watching his first performance. We are like family now and our real families, too.”

And Junsu told that he was a big fan of Mr. Levay, and chose this play unhesitatingly because of the brilliant music.

[Trans] Writers’ Thanks in the K Star Magazine (March 2012)

Jang, Kyungjin(interviewer) :

When I’d have a plan to interview with Xiah-Junsu, I couldn’t expect this kind of recognition that far. But he surpassed all my expectation. Junsu was a very nice and genuine person. His eyes were shining brightly, and his unique laughter really sounded like “u-kyang-kyang,” the onomatopoeia which his fans used for imitating that voice.

Most of all, I was very much impressed with his positive view of life. (So I want to give him a new nickname, “apostle Positive Kim”.) By his favor, I reminded many precious memories and feelings which had laid aside in my mind because of a busy life.

Junsu, I’ll remember you, and the feathers that you scattered for the stage against all odds

^.^

– Choi, Jieun(interviewer) :

The interview with Xiah-Junsu was so delightful. He was serious for his music and musical play, of course. But on the topics like dance, soccer, car and JYJ members, he chattered with the mirth.

Lastly I asked him which team would be a winner of Euro 2012. At that time, he was in a fitting room to change his clothes because of a tight schedule. Suddenly he opened a curtain half, and grappled for a while. Then he replied to a question with some significant in his face. “Umm…… Spain!” After that, he smiled again like a boy who came up with a solution to the very troubling problem.

Junsu is a refreshingly candid and breezy, and I find very appealing on his own personality.

[TRANS] 120220 Singles Magazine Interview with Kim Junsu

[TRANS] 120220 Singles Magazine Interview with Kim Junsu

This is the only moment: Kim Junsu

I went to the musical “Elisabeth” the night before interviewing him. It was the first performance by Kim Junsu, who stood tall as a JYJ member and a musical actor. The audience became breathless as if the air had disappeared when Junsu appeared as the captivating “Tod” with platinum blond hair. Kim Junsu with intense charisma and husky voice explosively proved himself every second, minute and moment. What I saw was free but passionate youth. Kim Junsu, during our first exclusive interview with him, proved he is a smart man who guides his own destiny during his honest conversation with us.

-Yesterday was your first time for “Elisabeth.” How do you feel?

It was quite burdensome because European musical is unfamiliar to us [Koreans] and “Elisabeth”, especially, has more lyrical elements. I think it is special because it also contains fantasy. Although people’s expectations were too high and I felt more burdens on my shoulders, I feel really satisfied as I finished the first performance. I feel exhilarated that I can make drama with the best actors and actresses.

-Did you feel the fans? The audience’s reaction was the most passionate during the curtain call. It felt like a concert.

I can feel them during the curtain call, but not during the show. They seem to be too cautious and feel diffident thinking ‘can I clap?’ I wish they will feel more comfortable because they don’t need to stand on too much on formality for musical.

-People in Europe, the home of this musical, and those who visited Europe to watch the musical are most ardent about the character ‘Death.’

I heard the one who acts as ‘Death’ usually gets number one when people vote for the popularity of musical actors in Austria. Thus, stars of that country usually acted as Tod. I obviously considered Mozart was the best character (because I performed “Mozart”). Before, I could not understand why Tod was popular when Elisabeth is the main character of the show. Tod is attractive because he is not a human, but a god, and can describe something human cannot show.

-You should have been excited when you got the offer.

I actually hesitated a lot. Because the word ‘death’ felt too heavy to me, I wondered ‘doesn’t it require dignity, am I not too young to portray the character?’ Although I knew it is the best musical with the best character, I was first worried if it would suit me because there is a difference between what I would like to do and what I can actually do. On the other hand, who can define death? I thought no one would know. Death can be an old man, a child, a sexy young man, or a middle-aged man with big belly. Well, then, I wanted to portray Death like ‘me.’ It was a good opportunity for me to become a better musical actor after performing “Mozart” and “Tears of Heaven”.

-I was surprised that Death could be portrayed as extremely sexy.

I was cast in the role with (Ryu) Jung-han hyung and (Song) Chang-eui hyung. We decided to interpret the character freely. But I lacked profoundness and dignity compared to the other hyungs. I wondered what can stand up to the profoundness, and decided to be young and sexy but also heinous at the same time. So, I used the walk like a god at first, but I changed and walked like a cat to give more sexiness. I feel pleasant that the audience recognized and appreciated those details.

-The scene with group dance was wonderful. It was like a concert.

I am the only one doing the group dance [among three of us]. It used to be really short but the director told us he wanted to expand, and it became longer.

-Death is attractive because it has complex characteristics. Death loves Elisabeth by seducing her to a bad path, tempting her, and chasing her away.

That’s what makes it difficult but love acting as Death. It needs to be portrayed as sexy but evil and emotionless. Because Death is death, it guides people to death as if it were nothing.

-Because of that, it might have been painstaking to portray the love. What kind of love does Death have toward Elisabeth?

It is the love that you ask ‘oh, was it really love?’ when Elisabeth dies and finally comes into his arms. The director told me to portray that feeling with a single drop of tear. It is the tear of irony and vanity because you are extremely happy to have her but she is gone at the same time. I thought a little shudder during Elisabeth’s death would give a huge impact because I portrayed him as a cool-headed when killing others.

-To be honest, I could not see the tear because the stage was too far. The kiss, however, gave a strong impression.

Mine was the most intense (compared to Song Chang-eui and Ryu Jung-han). Haha. I didn’t mean to kiss too passionately either. I didn’t do it like that even during the rehearsals, but I fell into it as I was on the stage. I thought I should do it because I finally got the girl I really wanted and longed for. At the after party, Ok Joo-hyun noona told me I was good. I thought the last scene was extremely important to show love because there are not many scenes where Elisabeth and Death actually meet as the musical portrays the life story of Elisabeth.

-I heard that you need to convey the emotions by singing for most of the scenes. How do you feel?

Even during “Mozart”, I was insufficient in the beginning, but I got better as I performed. Yesterday was the same. With the audience, I do motions and act differently than I have done during rehearsals. Although these are small, they help to portray the death in complete details. Because I have 30 shows, I will hunt for them for at least 10 performances. Haha.

-What is the emotional difference between concert and musical?

People clap for me, Kim Junsu, at a concert while they clap for me as the character in a musical. I am happy that I can live a different life during these two to three hours, and I get exhilarated that people understand what I wanted to deliver on site. I don’t know which one is better, but they are different. I am a lucky person who gets to taste both of them.

-Park Yoochun came last night. What did he say?

I was surprised. He said “I saw the 1st act” after the 1st act was over. He told me he just came without telling me because I would tell him not to come. (Towards the manager) What did he say? (Manager: He said he was proud and it was the role that only Junsu can do.) Huh? He told me “the ladies would love it, wouldn’t they?” Haha.

-Musicals also require acting. Don’t you want to act on plays or in dramas? Park Yoochun and Kim Jaejoong also act in dramas.

I would like to if possible. I am not drawing lines but I would like to play out as a musical actor because I started with musicals.

-You lost a lot of weight by playing soccer. Are you very active with FC MEN, a football club of celebrities?

I only play soccer once a week because it is winter. During summer and fall, I even play three times a week.

-Are you close with any professional soccer player?

I am close with Jung Sung-young, goalkeeper. I used to get along with Park Jisung, Lee Chung-young and Yoo Sang-chul during the benefit performance at Veitnam, but I don’t dare to call them because they would be too busy.

-What do you love about soccer?

Oh, I would like to be a soccer player if I was reborn. Did you know it is okay for a soccer player to have a relationship and even swear? He can even participate in a game after drunk driving. That is the difference between entertainers. Entertainers live with images and they live with their skills. They are forgiven if they are skilled like the incident when even Suarez refused Evra’s handshake. On the other hand, entertainers are finished if their image is not good even if they have talent. Also, I loved playing soccer since I was young. My brother played baseball and I played soccer, but my family could not support both of us. Because my brother had better physique, I had to forgo when one of us had to give up.

-That twin brother Junho became new Korean star in Japan.

My brother was really good at baseball and he even got proposal for professional team. Ironically, he confessed he did not like baseball. He said he would not be happy even if he succeeded and earned great amount of money as a professional baseball player. This happened when I just made debut as TVXQ. My father, who supported my brother, suffered and I also vented my anger on my brother. But, I feel really great as his younger brother because he is working hard and doing well.

-Since when did you have husky voice?

I think it was since I was in 9th or 10th grade. I started singing since I was 5th grader in elementary school. My voice broke when I was in middle school and could not sing for 3-4 years. I screamed a lot because I could not sing. When my voice changed, it had already become husky.

-Did you like your voice?

I did not realize at first. But people, who only knew me through songs, always asked me “do you have sore throat?” “You must practice a lot” whenever I met them. That was stressful. Later one day, even I was shocked listening to my voice on radio. It was too husky and I could not dare to listen. Haha. Well now, I am okay with it.

-Because we are talking about singing, did you know Jun Soo-kyung and Park Sun-joo praised your voice? Don’t you want to try new challenges with your voice, like attending shows like “I Am a Singer”?

We talked about it. Xiah Junsu can participate in “I Am a Singer”, but we cannot participate in any entertainment shows.

-Are entertainment shows the only hindrance?

We can participate in every area including current affairs, economy, culture, drama, film. But not entertainment.

-You must feel suffocated.

Well, I am not greedy about to going on entertainment shows. But, there is huge difference between not participating and cannot participate. I would like to be on good music programs like “Music Wave”, “Open Concert”, “Love Request”, or  ”Sketchbook”. It is sad that we cannot participate although we are singers.

-JYJ’s world tour was a breakthrough with enthusiastic response. Whose idea was it?

Our agency’s representative made it go well. The three of us also were anxious for it too.

-How did you feel when you met international fans?

I was shocked. I was surprised even when we first had our showcase in the U.S. I was really happy and surprised when fans in Canada, Spain, Germany, and other places sang along with us and shouted our names. They energize me whenever I want to give up.

-Do you still want to give up?

Sometimes. I became placid compared to before. We could not do 10 out of 10 but now we can at least do 2-3 things from 10 options. We plan 10 events secretly. We just do not announce it until we are certain. Many fans criticise that the agency does not work hard enough, but I would like to tell them that is not true. If we can do all what we plan freely, we would be way busier than right now.

-There was a report that JYJ was the most discussed celebrity on twitter. Is SNS helpful to communicate with fans?

Yes. It is the only method. News articles are not a method of communication to be honest. I can only express my opinion through SNS.

-You once said you developed a desire to become a singer after seeing Kangta. There are many people who want to be singers after you. Do you have anything to tell them?

Don’t become idol? The world of idol in Korea is… Haha.

-How do you feel now? Do you feel tough to live as a star?

Well, I enjoy challenges and I try hard to get over stress. Because one gains something when one loses something. Every celebrity and idol must realise this in order not to go extreme. They don’t realize this at the beginning. They only see what they lose and suffer.

-Although you suffered a lot, didn’t you also achieve something normal people cannot? You gained fame at 27 years old.

In the beginning I only thought in the other way. I was pessimistic. Why did I become an entertainer? I cannot have romantic relationships easily, I cannot go to places like LOTTE World or CarribeanBay, I envied normal people a lot. Other idols would think the same because there are many restrictions. But, I realized I only saw what I have lost instead of what I have gained. When I listened to my friends, they were worried about what I thought was natural. I realized, aha, we are all the same. When I started to appreciate what I have gained, I felt differently. But I would never become an entertainer if I were reborn. I am certain about that. It is not that I hate my current life, but I would like to enjoy what I have lost.

-Oh, you really would like to visit LOTTE World, don’t you?

Yes. I really love it, the world of dreams!

-What do you most appreciate?

I appreciate the whole situation when people notice me, clap for me, and love me. I am thankful to enjoy this life like it is.

-Did you start building a school at Cambodia after you appreciated what you have gained?

I thought I could not work as a singer any longer when I came out from the former company. If I did not have determination, I could not have dared to come out. It was during the time when we were at the top selling out all 6 concerts at the Tokyo Dome in Japan. It might have seemed as imprudent to break everything. I was really scared and afraid, but I was certain I would not be happy with my life like that. I thought, will I be able to say I lived a happy life when I leave the company after thirteen years of contract when I would be in my 30’s? It was impossible to endure the work for the rest of the contract years with only two hours of sleep per day. Of course, I was worried about the staff, who took care of me and worked for me, but I thought this was really not a life for me. We came out at the risk of our singing careers; we started again. I found my new life as a singer. So, I would like to share with others. People should share when they can.

-Is a romantic relationship a large part of what you have lost?

There are many restrictions as a celebrity. One of them is having a romantic relationship.

-Many celebrities announce their relationship. Can you not do that?

It is possible. To be honest, it is funny not to be in love when you are 27 years old. It is not something weird or having an illness. But fans always tell us “you can do it. Just don’t get caught.” I know what they mean because there is huge difference between not knowing and knowing.

-Is it etiquette for fans?

Yes it is. But, all three of us now don’t think we must hide it. Having a relationship does not mean we are getting married. It is not something bad. It is something beautiful.

-What is your ideal type?

A lady I can love. It would be better to meet a lady that I love instead of a lady who loves me. On the other hand, a lady should meet a man who loves her to live a happy life.

-Tell me in more details.

I don’t think appearance is important. But I love someone who is kind and respects elders. I hate women who smoke. I am conservative. I think it is also because I have never smoked. I wouldn’t like someone who can’t meet these two criteria even if she is popular and pretty.

-Don’t you want to have a romantic relationship?

I do. One sings better when they are in love. Songs by singers in their 30’s and 40’s are deeper because those singers are not only talented with singing but also have different emotions. When Yim Jae-beom sings “How come, we are” the emotion really becomes ‘how come, we are.’ Many young singers in their 20’s can sing better with high notes. But we cannot follow their sensitivity and emotions because these come through experience and time.

-Is that the reason why you indicated emotion is more important than the technique? Techniques can be learned. How do you keep your emotions?

You cannot practice it. Every song contains joy, anger, sorrow and pleasure. One should sing with those emotions. Then, they would reach out to the listeners. People can easily differentiate songs sang by singers with magnificent techniques but no emotions. Thus, I even think before when I only sang few measures of a song. If I don’t have the experience the lyrics say, I imagine a similar experience and sing. If the lyrics are happy, I smile a lot and if it is sad, I make a sorrowful face. Then, emotions would be released through my voice.

-Kim Junsu in his mid-30’s will be a very sensitive man.

I just want to be a splendid middle-aged man. I am not afraid of aging up. It will be okay to have a big belly and wrinkles, but I want to be a middle-aged man with wonderful personality like my father.

-Is your father your role model?

I would like to resemble what he does to my mother. He is really good to my mother. I understand my father because my mother used to be Miss Korea. He followed my mother for five years, but my mother hated the fact that he loved her. Haha. Since we were young he always emphasized “You guys should at least do dishes if you want to be loved by your wives” while he was doing laundry and dishes. He is not patriarchal at all.

-Your house must be in peace and harmony.

Yes. We are a harmonious family. Hyung is also funny.

-Do you really do laundry and dishes by yourself?
