[TRANS] Musical from Vienna rocks South-Korea! (Junsu in Musical Mozart)

This article was posted in German website, Musical Vienna a while back but a JYJ3 reader has kindly translated this article to English. The article shows the amount of enthusiasm people have for both of Sylvester Levay‘s musicals, Mozart and Elisabeth, as well as the recognition gained by Junsu in his ownership of the titular role.

The cast of the South-Korean production of MOZART! – first of all Asian popstar Kim Junsu – who already excited the audience in the title role and won the “Newcomer of the Year” Award at the Asian Musical Awards. The concerts with highlights of the successful productions MOZART! and ELISABETH went smoothly under the musical conductorship of composer Sylvester Levay. “I am very pleasured that EMK Musical Company, the Korean producers of MOZART! got the idea to hold the four musical concerts in Seoul. I am especially impressed with the young Korean audience, who tonight even showed enthusiasm about a serious strory like ELISABETH. We made the same experience during the premiere of MOZART! in January 2010.”

Uwe Kröger as European Musical-Star-guest

As a European musical star-guest Uwe Kröger was to be seen in the role of Erzbischof Colloredo with a song, especially written for him by Michael Kunze and Sylvester Levay.

Olympic Stadium in Seoul

Thomas Drozda, general manager of VBW international GmbH (Vereinigte Bühnen Wien): “After the success of MOZART! in January we are glad that our South-Korean partner EMK Musical Company decided to show concert performances of our successful productions MOZART! and ELISABETH with the Asian popstar Kim Junsu at the Olympic Stadium. In spring 2011 the musical MOZART! will again be part of the repertoire of the Sejong Center for Performing Arts in Seoul. Right now we are working at full blast on realizing the South-Korean version of ELISABETH, which is planned to be premiered in 2012. We are really proud to be able to say that VBW has conquered the South-Korean musical sector.

[NEWS] drama musical on the end of 2011 mentioned Kim Jun Soo

some news on the end of 2011 about drama musicals on korea

they (ofcourse and always) mentioned Junsu

♪( ´▽`)♪

[NEWS] “As for musicals, Kim Junsu is by far the best”

[T/N: The article is very critical of stars that did not perform well in musicals and theatre. Even one of the most popular idol singers was criticized quite harshly in this article. However, there was no negative evaluation of Junsu at all in the article. Because our Junsu is a real gem, not a pebble.]

Popular stars’ report cards of their stage performances, 2011 – survey of 118 people working in performing arts and twitter users

Among the popular stars that stood on the stage this year, Kim Junsu (left to right) who appeared in ‘Mozart!’ and Jo Seungwoo of ‘Zoro’ received evaluations that [they] possess both power that dominates the stage and high level of recognition [from the public].

Unrelated part omitted

Just in the recent years, popular stars who work mainly in TV and movies are performing on the stage in theatre and musicals. There are conflicting opinions on positive and negative effects of so-called star marketing, but stars that perform regardless of what kind of stage do not seem to be a short-term trend any more. This means that it is time to distinguish real gems from pebbles by delivering a cool-headed judgment on their performance on stage regardless of their popularity among the public.

How did audiences and people working in the field of performing arts evaluate popular stars that stood on the stage in theatre and musical? Based on the survey filled out by 18 performing arts-related persons and 100 people who follow Interpark’s Twitter account (@InterparkTicket), [we] found out which stars performed impressively and which stars poorly.

Above all, many named JYJ’s member Kim Junsu of musical ‘Mozart!’ as a star who shined on the stage. Seven out of 18 performing art experts and 44 out of 100 audiences praised his acting on the stage. Kim Junsu appeared in Austrian musical ‘Mozart!’ in 2010 and also this year’s encore presentation.

Professor Lee Yuri of Chungkang College of Cultural Industries stated that Kim Junsu “possesses various conditions to be a musical star, such as his unique voice with especially attractive high-pitched tones, a sincere attitude, and the presence that dominates the stage. He would do well the role of Mark in ‘Rent’.” Also, Ku Jaheung, president of Myungdong Art Theatre evaluated that Kim Junsu “went above and beyond the star quality of an idol and presented acting of delicate emotions.”

[NEWS] 111229 Who has influence in Korean musicals?

A survey targeting 77 officials in Korean musical industry to choose “influential person” in Korean musical industry.

The landscape of Korean musical world has changed. Investors’ influence has also grown noticeably. On the other hand, the influence of theater has drastically decreased. Culture Department of DongA Daily and musical magazine ‘The Musical’ jointly conducted a survey on “Who is influential Korean musical market?” A questionnaire was sent to 100 people working in musical field (musical agencies, producers, investors, actors, staffs, theaters, etc.) from the 7th to the 19th, and we received responses from 77 people.

When the survey was conducted 4 years ago, among the actors, Jo Seung Woo (#4) was the only cited in top 10. This year, including Kim Junsu (#8), there are 2 actors in the list.

Compared to 4 years ago, from #8 to #10, Kim Junsu, Kim Yang-seon (director of INT E&T sector of Interpark), Lee Ji-na (musical director) are 3 new entrants. It shows the fast changing landscape of the musicals market.

[NEWS] Junsu and “Tears of Heaven” mentioned in the newspaper article that analyzes the greatest boom of performing arts industries.

[T/N: The article analyzes various reasons for the recent boom in performing arts industries in 2011. Junsu was mentioned as an example of why foreign viewers are coming to Korea to see performing arts.]

Also, it seems that concerns about lack of newly-created musicals or lineup with a heavy focus on large-scaled foreign musicals with licenses are being eased due to the appearance of newly-written musical creations such as ‘Gwanghwa Gate Sonata’, ‘Please Take Care of My Mother’, ‘Tears of Heaven’ and ‘Casting an Orchid Painting’.

Performance viewing of foreign tourists that used to be focused on non-verbal performances is spreading into general musicals thus contributing to market expansion. Popular idol group JYJ’s member Kim Junsu appeared in musical ‘Mozart!’ and ‘Tears of Heaven’ and shook Japanese and Chinese audiences’ ticket hearts [T/N: attracted Japanese and Chinese audiences.]

so this isn’t a surprise anymore ^^

[NEWS] 111214 Director Lee Jina of ‘Evita’ – “What do you think about idols’ appearance in musical? They just have to do it well!”

T/N: Only parts pertaining to Junsu are translated

The representative of idol stars who succeeded in musical world is definitely JYJ’s Kim Junsu.

In 2003, Kim Junsu starred in musical ‘Mozart’ and didn’t fall behind Lim Taekyung and Park Euntae, superstars of the musical world, in impact and ticket power. After that, Kim Junsu appeared in ‘Tears of Heaven’ (T/N: the journalist mistook it with musical ‘Song of the Sun’) and is preparing for ‘Elizabeth’ that will start off in February.

“Junsu, I highly appreciate him. After hearing from Seonah who has performed together with him, I went watch ‘Mozart’ because of Junsu and have even fallen for that musical.”
