Ultimate K-pop Survival Guide: JYJ

KPOP-MILITARY-BANNER-2-

K-pop is an extremely competitive genre, a small country with a population of merely 50 million people produces new artists literally almost every day. The industry is like a ruthless stepmother: once you make a serious mistake, it might cost you your career and more.  Career ups and downs are normal in an artist’s life but in K-pop, once you reached the lowest part, it is very difficult to climb up the mountain again. Ultimate K-pop Survival Guide will be a short series on artists who have managed to turn their failing career from point zero back again or who had gone through a lot of hardships and still managed to remain successful. Not only rookie artists but we, the audience, can also learn a lot from them.

Avoid them as if they were lepers

The first installment of the series is dedicated to perhaps the biggest survivors of the dark side of K-pop: JYJ. Everyone knows what they have been through, but it doesn’t hurt to summarize and focus on how they actually managed to cope with the situation.

For the uninitiated: once there had been an idol band we can possibly call one of the greatest successes of K-pop ever: Dong Bang Shin Ki, or by their English abbreviation, TVXQ. The five-member boyband, consisting of Jaejoong, Yunho, Yoochun, Junsu and Changmin, was among the first successful wave of K-pop to set foot in Japan, and with blood and tears, they worked their way up the ladder, from performing to a mere handful of fans to filling the 50,000 seat Tokyo Dome in rows. Their fandom, Cassiopeia, was certified by the Guinness Book of Records for being the largest official fan club in the world. They reached unimaginable heights in Asia, thus their break-up was probably one of the biggest shocking events ever to shake the world of K-pop. Not because boybands are supposed to last forever, but because they were at the height of their careers and were known to be close to each other. When the news broke out that Jaejoong, Yoochun and Junsu started a lawsuit against their agency, S.M. Entertainment, to nullify their 13-year contract. At first, everyone hoped there could be a settlement, but in October 2009 the Seoul court ruled in favor of JYJ, and as a result, the Fair Trade Commission started advocating the use of ‘model contracts’ to prevent agencies from having artists sign excessive deals.

Though the social impact of their lawsuit was huge, industry players were forced to rethink the ways they were treating their artists, and JYJ emerged as a moral winner, the real hardships were to begin just then. S.M. Entertainment appealed against the court decision and a three year desperate battle took off. Not long after JYJ announced the establishment of their new band, their initial supporter in Japan, Avex, suddenly had a change of heart, claiming sole rights to manage the band in Japan, dismissing claims that JYJ’s new management company, C-JeS Entertainment, had any rights to organize events for the band on Japanese grounds. They too, ended up in a long lawsuit, during which JYJ was denied any kind of rights to perform in Japan. At the same time, all doors in Korea closed as well. The industry suddenly started treating the three young men as if they had leprosy. In silent agreement, major broadcasting stations denied them appearances as musicians. Some were claiming that they did not wish to get entangled in court related issues.

C-JeS Entertainment thus had to build a different strategy to promote JYJ. With no possibilities to appear on televised music shows and variety programs, the usual promotion cycle was out of question. The possibility of failure also lingered in the air, with the artists preparing themselves for the worst; that they might not be able to stand on stage again.

The rules of survival for JYJ were as follows:

1. Keep silent. Despite the constant rumors, the extensive media coverage, part of the torn fandom accusing them of betrayal, former label mates openly criticising them for their decision, JYJ kept silent. As they expressed in their 1000 day anniversary magazine, they decided to work silently and not be shaken by accusations and rumors.

2. If you cannot enter through the door, climb through the window. As they were denied the chance to promote through television, JYJ had to look for other ways of reaching their audience. They started separate activities, Yoochun and Jaejoong became involved in television dramas and movies, gaining wide followings as actors. Junsu began to appear in musicals and in a mere three years’ time, he went from being looked at as a ‘box office bringing tool’ to a highly praised and critically acclaimed musical actor on his own right. When the nation’s main broadcasters were not willing to talk to them as musicians, ironically, they became the sweethearts of the government, appointed as goodwill ambassadors and promoters of national and international scale events like the 2014 Asian Games, and were among the few selected artists invited to perform at President Park Geun-hye’s inauguration. The latter marked their first televised performance in three years in their home country. When local record labels were unwilling to assist, they went to the US and started working with American producers, despite their lack of English skills.

3. No regrets, no complaints. In their 1000 day anniversary magazine, the band members expressed that despite all the hardships, they did not regret their decision, not once.  Having faith in your decisions is important for obtaining and maintaining the strength necessary to survive. They have also never complained of unfair treatment or the lack of opportunities because of the silent ban in Korea and Japan. They just did what they had to do: work hard and smile. I believe that having a positive attitude and being able to smile at their fans was an important factor in their success. Instead of giving in to striking waves of depression and self-pity, they rose above hard times by sticking together and supporting each other.

4. Don’t lose your trust. When unfortunate events happen, one can easily feel they are no longer able to trust other people. JYJ, too, had gone through this period. When Baek Chang-ju offered his help in 2009, they did not trust him, it took them months to open up and accept his helping hand. C-JeS Entertainment was established exclusively to steer JYJ’s boat through troubled waters and it went from a one person venture to a serious agency that employs over 40 people with sales amounting to 33 billion won (roughly 30 million USD) in only two years’ time.

jyj-mahalo

JYJ’s legal fights have just recently ended, but their battle is far from being over yet. Broadcasting stations are still treading carefully. Despite all the unfortunate events that had befallen them (appearances denied, concerts cancelled last minute, accusations, rumors, some of their own fans turning their backs on the band), JYJ never once gave up.

Their album, In Heaven, sold over 350,000 copies, Junsu’s Tarantallegra was one of the most successful solo albums of 2012 despite lacking in promotion, both JYJ’s and Junsu’s solo world tours were completely sold out. Their Tokyo Dome comeback concert in April 2013 had successfully wrapped up and attracted 210,000 people altogether.

Besides part of the Cassiopeia fandom still supporting them as much as they also support the duo TVXQ, JYJ gained a firm and enthusiastic new fan base as well, through their numerous group and individual activities. Jaejoong’s limited edition mini album became  a huge success, Yoochun is virtually the most successful idol actor on the market and Junsu cemented his name as one of the best singers ever born in Korea. They are wealthier than most artists under their former agency, including their former band members Yunho and Changmin.

Were they lucky? I would not think so. Many of us would have given up such a grueling and frankly, seemingly hopeless battle against giant obstacles. What we can learn from JYJ is that you need to keep your faith, grind your teeth, work hard and believe in your own abilities. Only then will you be able to turn all unfortunate events into glistening success.

Kim Junsu of JYJ, Narrating the MBC Documentary…His ‘Unique’ Gentle Voice

Kim Junsu of JYJ met the viewers through a gentle narration.
Kim Junsu showed off his charming voice by narrating the MBC Documentary Special <The Zoo is Alive>.
On that day Kim Junsu told stories of various animals living in Seoul Zoo. Kim Junsu breathed new life into the program with his calm, yet lively voice, telling stories about the marrige of the gorilla Gorina who was depressed after losing her husband, the healing process of tiger Crane who has facial dysmorphism, and the ocean adjustment training of dolphin Jaedori.
Kim Junsu especially emphasized that the zoo is changing into a mecca to protect wild animals and conserve species, not a playground for humans anymore. As he is a famous ballad singer, Kim Junsu’s gentle narration was more persuading by not being too coercive.
On the other hand, Kim Junsu’s appearance on MBC is more special due to the fact that it has been 4 years [since he appeard on TV] after filing a lawsuit against his ex-company. Even though he didn’t show himself on TV this time, it is expected for JYJ, including Kim Junsu, to be on TV more freely starting from this appearance.
Before the broadcasting, Kim Junsu said, “The animals were so lovely. I hope everyone gets more interested in animals after watching this documentary. The story is so good and warm, so I hope many people watch it and have a healing time.”

NEWS] 130326 JYJ′s Kim Junsu′s Animal Documentary Draws High Ratings

Kim Junsu′s voice alone managed to bring high ratings to a late-night documentary.

According to AGB Nielsen Media Research, the MBC documentary The Zoo is Alive, which aired on March 25, managed to garner national viewership ratings of 4.7 percent.

The numbers are 1 point higher than last week′s documentary Uncomfortable Fifth Year of Youth College and 1.6 point higher than the pilot variety I Am Your Substitute Angel that aired the week before.

25945627

The number is especially staggering considering how the show was put up against such issue-making shows as SBS′ Healing Camp, which featured the controversial Sul Kyung Gu, and KBS2′s Hello.

While the ending credits rolled, scenes from Kim Junsu′s recording for the documentary and an interview were aired.

“I brought up my courage for the show because it was a documentary on animals,” he said.

Viewers commented, “I liked his voice,” “I hope there′s another episode coming” and “It was great to see Kim Junsu on MBC for the first time in a long while.”

[NEWS] 130414 Kim Junsu, awarded Best Korean Male Artist at China’s V-Chart Awards

On April 13th, Kim Junsu won the Best Korean Male Artist Award at China’s largest music video website Yin Yue Tai’s award ceremony, the V-Charts Awards, with his English single ‘Uncommitted’.

Kim Junsu’s award is receiving attention for being voted by fans all around the world. He was not selected by a board of judges, but rather through the online V-chart results for the year of 2012 and an additional round of voting. He was awarded first place with the most number of points.

Kim Junsu’s first English single, ‘Uncommitted’, is a sweet and mellow R&B song composed by Sony Music composer, Bruce Automatic, who has worked with the likes of The Wanted and Leona Lewis. With this song, he received a huge response from China to South America and Europe.

CJES Entertainment stated, “As this award ceremony is decided by aggregated chart results, there is even more meaning to this award. Kim Junsu is very happy and thankful that he won first place with a song that was revealed through only a music video and some performances. He plans to express his gratitude through a video.”

Additionally, a music representative said, “After JYJ’s recent ‘The Return of the JYJ’ concerts in Tokyo Dome, ‘Uncommitted’ placed #1 on Amazon’s K-Pop chart and is showing its immense popularity. Kim Junsu showed his musical capabilities to fans worldwide with his 13-city world tour last year, receiving a hot response even in Europe and South America.”

[OPINION] 130124 “Donation Culture” of Kim Junsu and his Fans, Just as Amazing as Receiving 2 Golden Ticket Awards

Kim Junsu and his fans’ donation work is just as amazing as him becoming the double award winner of the Golden Ticket Award

Kim Junsu and his fans’ donation work is just as amazing as him becoming the double award winner of the Golden Ticket Awards

Kim Junsu of JYJ has become a double award winner of the Eighth Golden Ticket Awards. Even though idol singers trying out musicals have become some sort of a trend, Junsu is unique in a sense that no one else has been as active and successful as him. An important fact here is that his receiving two awards is not a mere act of fan service to please his idol fandom.

What is interesting about the Golden Ticket Awards is that this award is to celebrate ticket power. It is an award that shows true worthiness of successful musicals in a sense that the awards are given to so-called money-generating musicals. It is interesting to see that Kim Junsu received two very specialized awards such as Male Musical Actor and Concert Musician.

JYJ Kim Junsu’s worth that dominates the musical market is simply amazing.

The Golden Ticket Awards is rather interesting because it celebrates the persons with the most ticket power on the stage. [Getting this award] is a great accomplishment because it chooses the persons that are truly vouched for and recognized by producers.

20130107160609639

Kim Junsu received the Popularity Award and the Best Male Lead award in 2012’s Korean Musical Awards. He really is a musical star that possesses both popularity and capabilities. A fandom may be able to work hard so that a musical actor can receive the Popularity Award. However, the Best Male Lead Award cannot be influenced by fans in that fashion. Receiving the Best Male Lead Award means that the actor has truly exhibited excellent talent as a musical actor.

Interpark, a ticket selling and distribution company, recently announced winners for the Golden Ticket Awards after they processed relevant information such as the number of tickets sold, additional points based on ranking, and on-line polls. Kim Junsu took the first place in both Musical (Male Actor) and Concert.

Kim Junsu who played the lead role of Tod in Musical ‘Elisabeth’ showed strong ticket power through his solo concerts as well as ‘Xia Ballad & Musical Concert’ that was held for 3 days at the end of December. It is only natural that he took two awards in a sense that he boasted unmatched presence in terms of ticket power.

“Kim Junsu receiving Musical Award in the Golden Ticket Award after he received the Best Male Lead Award [in the Korean Musical Awards] is evidence that he is sincere about musicals as well as possesses high box-office values.”

“It’s surprising that an idol singer took the first place in Musical. Kim Junsu proved that he is much loved by audiences of all ages.”

It was natural that compliments poured in when he received an award for ticket power on top of the Best Male Lead award. There is a saying that goes “grasshoppers only last for a season” [T/N: popularity or something/something’s dominance in one area is fleeting]. There are people who only consider musicals a quick business to generate income. There are idol singers that plunge into musicals using their popularity.

The idol singers’ advance into musicals seems to be a win-win business strategy between idols [and the musical industry]. Idols’ appearances in musicals have always been the target of criticisms because idols singers in musicals, rather than securing their place as sincere musical actors, were more about boosting ticket sales [using their popularity].

07092450_2

Unlike idols who considered musicals as dabbling into musicals and leaving their marks in the industry, Kim Junsu secured his place as a true star actor in the musical market. The fact that Kim Junsu proved his value as a true musical star, not just a mean to sell more tickets, confirms once again that he should not be called a mere idol singer.

“I really received so much love this past year. I thank my fans that cheered for me every time I stood on the stage.”

“I hope the audience that was with me while I was on the stage felt happy and gained happy memories. I think the best way to repay their love for my performances and music is doing my best and performing well on the stage.” The Eighth Golden Ticket Awards double award winner Kim Junsu did not forget to thank his fans who always supported him.

Some criticized that it was unfair for people who did musicals their whole lives. Their logic is that it does not make sense that all kinds of awards, almost impossible to receive even after doing musicals the whole life, were given to Kim Junsu who debuted only a couple of years ago.

If [an actor] has no talent and skills and still receives an award, he deserves criticism. The fact that these awards that even musical actors with long careers cannot receive were awarded to Kim Junsu means that he has that much of talent and he does his best.

20130107151004372

What is even more interesting and meaningful than Kim Junsu receiving awards is this “donation culture”. His fans are also part of it. By donating all the gifts that poured in from all over the world for his solo concerts and musicals, he showed his quality as a star that acts together with his fans.

Rice wreaths that his fans sent Kim Junsu were sent to the underprivileged such as children who cannot afford to bring lunch to school. 2,000 briquettes that 20 families can use for one month were sent to underprivileged senior citizens who live by themselves that use briquettes but cannot afford to buy them. 6,000 egg wreaths were donated to food banks nationwide to relieve malnutrition problems among the underprivileged such as children who live by themselves without parents and senior citizens who live by themselves.

It is a beautiful thing that a star and fans come together to share what they have with their neighbors in need of help. Kim Junsu was recognized as a talented musical actor. Kim Junsu proved his top worth through awards that celebrate ticket power. Kim Junsu is a true star with both talent and skills.

And his fans that make their star even more special by actively participating in charity work makes everyone around them happy. Kim Junsu and his fans’ charity work feels even more amazing than Kim Junsu becoming a double award winner. And maybe it is because Kim Junsu and his fans seem to have beautiful souls that help the less fortunate neighbors around them.

[TRANS] Junsu’s interview from Asiana Airlines journal

♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪

Junsu’s interview from Asiana Airlines journal

This fall, there’s a korean musician who tours around the world with his music and dance: XIAH JUNSU, once a member of TVXQ and now Kim Junsu, a member of JYJ and a musical actor. With rewriting K-pop history, he is keeping his fresh and bold steps by releasing his first solo album under the name of ‘XIA.’ His step is so brave as if he tries to reach the apex of K-pop power in his every concert on the worldwide tour. He participated in the minutest part of the recording process of the latest album, showing his firm determination as an artist. Where does this young man, who his shaping his own future, get his confidence from? We tried to answer this question through an e-mail interview as the singer was about to wrap up his successful New York and LA concerts.

Q. What is the overall keyword of the latest album <TARANTALLEGRA>?
A. There are largely two words: XIA and Unequalled. In light of putting all music that I want to do and I can do, ‘XIA’ is the word expressing everything I’ve been showing to the people. There are a variety of genre like pop, dance, ballad, R&B, hiphop, and electronics. In light of no TV promotion, I thought I had to make top-notch music and focused on ‘Unequalled’ music which leads the unequalled trend.

Q. You once said the title song TARANTALLEGRA is not a song to listen but a song to watch.
A. Yes. The latest music is inspired from the musical ELIZABETH in which I was participating. With acting the mysterious and charismatic DEATH who stands between a god and a man, I made this dream-like pop song. The title means a spell to make people dance. I tried to make a dramatic and extraordinary music video and put effort in details including fashion and choreography. This song can be completed with visual factors.

Q. You becomes the first Korean soloist singer to have concerts in Mexico, Brazil, and Chile. What makes this worldwide tour begin?
A. During JYJ’s worldwide tour I came to know there are many fans in North&South America and Europe and was motivated to work harder. I earn passion and energy from overseas fans’ response. After releasing the solo album and doing the Asia tour, I’ve earned more confidence. And, the main reason is ‘not to be complacent and hesitate but to move forward to a bigger goal.’

Q. (invisible)
A. (invisible) Musical teaches me a joy to interprete the established one into my own and to cooperate with other performers and staff to complete it. And I realize another potential I never knew, and it inspires me not only as a musical actor Kim Junsu but also as a singer XIA.

Q. After nine years from your debut, you can be more active in working and you seem to have a sense of accomplishment.
A. There’s happiness beyond a sense of accomplishment. Currently I’m not following the road that someone shows me, but coming up with ideas by myself and doing what I want. It’s so hard but rewarding. It heightens a sense of satisfaction as a singer. Compared with the past, I think I got maturer and knowledge of the world, and gradually grew into a man.

Q. You went to the other side of the world with K-pop. Our expectations are high for your future.
A. I’m grateful for big love and I have to try harder and think more. Like the latest solo album or worldwide tour, I will try new musical and continue my challenge in music. JYJ’s long-time-prepared 2nd worldwide album will be proceeded next year.
