Ultimate K-pop Survival Guide: JYJ

K-pop is an extremely competitive genre, a small country with a population of merely 50 million people produces new artists literally almost every day. The industry is like a ruthless stepmother: once you make a serious mistake, it might cost you your career and more.  Career ups and downs are normal in an artist’s life but in K-pop, once you reached the lowest part, it is very difficult to climb up the mountain again. Ultimate K-pop Survival Guide will be a short series on artists who have managed to turn their failing career from point zero back again or who had gone through a lot of hardships and still managed to remain successful. Not only rookie artists but we, the audience, can also learn a lot from them.

Avoid them as if they were lepers

The first installment of the series is dedicated to perhaps the biggest survivors of the dark side of K-pop: JYJ. Everyone knows what they have been through, but it doesn’t hurt to summarize and focus on how they actually managed to cope with the situation.

For the uninitiated: once there had been an idol band we can possibly call one of the greatest successes of K-pop ever: Dong Bang Shin Ki, or by their English abbreviation, TVXQ. The five-member boyband, consisting of Jaejoong, Yunho, Yoochun, Junsu and Changmin, was among the first successful wave of K-pop to set foot in Japan, and with blood and tears, they worked their way up the ladder, from performing to a mere handful of fans to filling the 50,000 seat Tokyo Dome in rows. Their fandom, Cassiopeia, was certified by the Guinness Book of Records for being the largest official fan club in the world. They reached unimaginable heights in Asia, thus their break-up was probably one of the biggest shocking events ever to shake the world of K-pop. Not because boybands are supposed to last forever, but because they were at the height of their careers and were known to be close to each other. When the news broke out that Jaejoong, Yoochun and Junsu started a lawsuit against their agency, S.M. Entertainment, to nullify their 13-year contract. At first, everyone hoped there could be a settlement, but in October 2009 the Seoul court ruled in favor of JYJ, and as a result, the Fair Trade Commission started advocating the use of ‘model contracts’ to prevent agencies from having artists sign excessive deals.

Though the social impact of their lawsuit was huge, industry players were forced to rethink the ways they were treating their artists, and JYJ emerged as a moral winner, the real hardships were to begin just then. S.M. Entertainment appealed against the court decision and a three year desperate battle took off. Not long after JYJ announced the establishment of their new band, their initial supporter in Japan, Avex, suddenly had a change of heart, claiming sole rights to manage the band in Japan, dismissing claims that JYJ’s new management company, C-JeS Entertainment, had any rights to organize events for the band on Japanese grounds. They too, ended up in a long lawsuit, during which JYJ was denied any kind of rights to perform in Japan. At the same time, all doors in Korea closed as well. The industry suddenly started treating the three young men as if they had leprosy. In silent agreement, major broadcasting stations denied them appearances as musicians. Some were claiming that they did not wish to get entangled in court related issues.

C-JeS Entertainment thus had to build a different strategy to promote JYJ. With no possibilities to appear on televised music shows and variety programs, the usual promotion cycle was out of question. The possibility of failure also lingered in the air, with the artists preparing themselves for the worst; that they might not be able to stand on stage again.

The rules of survival for JYJ were as follows:

1. Keep silent. Despite the constant rumors, the extensive media coverage, part of the torn fandom accusing them of betrayal, former label mates openly criticising them for their decision, JYJ kept silent. As they expressed in their 1000 day anniversary magazine, they decided to work silently and not be shaken by accusations and rumors.

2. If you cannot enter through the door, climb through the window. As they were denied the chance to promote through television, JYJ had to look for other ways of reaching their audience. They started separate activities, Yoochun and Jaejoong became involved in television dramas and movies, gaining wide followings as actors. Junsu began to appear in musicals and in a mere three years’ time, he went from being looked at as a ‘box office bringing tool’ to a highly praised and critically acclaimed musical actor on his own right. When the nation’s main broadcasters were not willing to talk to them as musicians, ironically, they became the sweethearts of the government, appointed as goodwill ambassadors and promoters of national and international scale events like the 2014 Asian Games, and were among the few selected artists invited to perform at President Park Geun-hye’s inauguration. The latter marked their first televised performance in three years in their home country. When local record labels were unwilling to assist, they went to the US and started working with American producers, despite their lack of English skills.

3. No regrets, no complaints. In their 1000 day anniversary magazine, the band members expressed that despite all the hardships, they did not regret their decision, not once.  Having faith in your decisions is important for obtaining and maintaining the strength necessary to survive. They have also never complained of unfair treatment or the lack of opportunities because of the silent ban in Korea and Japan. They just did what they had to do: work hard and smile. I believe that having a positive attitude and being able to smile at their fans was an important factor in their success. Instead of giving in to striking waves of depression and self-pity, they rose above hard times by sticking together and supporting each other.

4. Don’t lose your trust. When unfortunate events happen, one can easily feel they are no longer able to trust other people. JYJ, too, had gone through this period. When Baek Chang-ju offered his help in 2009, they did not trust him, it took them months to open up and accept his helping hand. C-JeS Entertainment was established exclusively to steer JYJ’s boat through troubled waters and it went from a one person venture to a serious agency that employs over 40 people with sales amounting to 33 billion won (roughly 30 million USD) in only two years’ time.

JYJ’s legal fights have just recently ended, but their battle is far from being over yet. Broadcasting stations are still treading carefully. Despite all the unfortunate events that had befallen them (appearances denied, concerts cancelled last minute, accusations, rumors, some of their own fans turning their backs on the band), JYJ never once gave up.

Their album, In Heaven, sold over 350,000 copies, Junsu’s Tarantallegra was one of the most successful solo albums of 2012 despite lacking in promotion, both JYJ’s and Junsu’s solo world tours were completely sold out. Their Tokyo Dome comeback concert in April 2013 had successfully wrapped up and attracted 210,000 people altogether.

Besides part of the Cassiopeia fandom still supporting them as much as they also support the duo TVXQ, JYJ gained a firm and enthusiastic new fan base as well, through their numerous group and individual activities. Jaejoong’s limited edition mini album became  a huge success, Yoochun is virtually the most successful idol actor on the market and Junsu cemented his name as one of the best singers ever born in Korea. They are wealthier than most artists under their former agency, including their former band members Yunho and Changmin.

Were they lucky? I would not think so. Many of us would have given up such a grueling and frankly, seemingly hopeless battle against giant obstacles. What we can learn from JYJ is that you need to keep your faith, grind your teeth, work hard and believe in your own abilities. Only then will you be able to turn all unfortunate events into glistening success.

[NEWS] 120914 “Not Possible” in domestic, “Welcome” abroad – JYJ’s Paradox

finally the news about how JYJ received unfair treatment from K -ent was find in daily newspaper

will this news effect how K-ent treated them? I dont think so, at least this will let people know how hard the situation that JYJ has to face.

 ❤❤❤  ❤❤❤  ❤❤❤  ❤❤❤  ❤❤❤  ❤❤❤  ❤❤❤  ❤❤❤  ❤❤❤  ❤❤❤  ❤❤❤  ❤❤❤  ❤❤❤

“Not Possible” in domestic, “Welcome” abroad – JYJ’s Paradox

[PIC: Idol Group JYJ – first Korean singer who had a concert in SanTiago, Chile on March 09. The group is exploring overseas markets since its activities in Korea have restrictions. From the Left: Jaejoong Kim, Yuchun Park and Junsu Kim. – Photo from C-JeS Entertainment]

The trio group JYJ (Jaejoong Kim, Yuchun Park, Junsu Kim) is unique. It is difficult to see the group in the country, but the group is doing remarkable activities abroad. The team toured in Spain, Germany, Chile and Peru and the member Junsu Kim had his solo concert in Mexico – all as the first Korean singers who ever had concerts in each country. Why is the atmosphere from inside and outside is so different? You may see an equation of Korean Pop industry’s power structure.

◆ Aftermath of TVXQ Controversy?

[Junsu Kim who had solo concert in Mexico on Sep 6]

The three members of JYJ had their debut in the year of 2004 as the quintet TVXQ under SM Entertainment. TVXQ shortly stood at the top in Korean pop industry and had 100,000 members in its fan-club. In 2009, the three members moved to the present agency and formed JYJ after ‘application for injunction to terminate the validity of exclusive contract’ against SM, claiming that 13-year of exclusive contract was too long. The lawsuit with SM is still ongoing.

After this, they have had difficulties in album distribution, venue rental, TV appearances and other things. With tremendous number of album sales and popularity, the public has not seen them in any of music/entertainment programmes for the last 3 years at all.

For example, Yuchun Park appeared in ‘SKK Scandal(KBS)’ and ‘Rooftop Prince(SBS)’ as a leading role, but no one could see his face in entertainment programmes of the both broadcasters despite the fact that actors appearing in the same broadcaster’s entertainment programmes during their drama is an unwritten rule in order to promote dramas. Even in some cases, his appearances were flip-flopped after scheduling.

First, broadcasting companies’ stance is that ‘we cannot cast the singer under legal dispute’. However, JYJ insists that ‘Independent activities are guaranteed until the ruling of the lawsuit on the merits’. Some say that this situation is because of external pressure.

“I was concerned a lot about the present situation that I can be on TV only through dramas. But I decided that it would be better to do something I can do the best, (knowing promotion would be difficult) released a solo album in May”, said Junsu Kim at the press conference in Mexico. His music video of the title song ‘Tarantallegra’ which cost him half a billion Won to make, has never once been aired.

JYJ looked overseas instead. The group betted on overseas stages with the fandom they established since TVXQ.

◆ Idol’s new market

The Group JYJ has done..

The atmosphere at Junsu Kim’s Solo Concert at Blackberry Auditorio in Mexico City, Mexico on Sep 6 was just boiling. The concert was the part of his North/South American tour followed from New York and Los Angeles. 3,000 fans were shouting his name and ‘I Love You, Junsu!’ in Korean and sung ‘Besame Mucho(Kiss me much)’ together. Fans were all sung along his latest Korean lyrics such as ‘Set Me Free’. Junsu Kim is due to continue European Tour in the second-half of this year. JYJ also toured in 15 cities from the last year to the first-half of this year and met 210,000 fans around the world.

Paradoxically speaking, the restriction in Korea domestic has become the other way into the new steps. The agency says South American tours are deficit as they are too far from Korea, but it explains that “In the manner of investment, we are trying to go anywhere as long as fans are there”.

“JYJ’s case is a condensable example of the fact that the practical power belongs to management companies, the capital itself under this idol producing system, although the popularity is earned by an idol member”, Jakga Kim, the pop-music critic commented. He continued, “JYJ showed the possibility that an idol group CAN survive by themselves, not depend on the cartel which acts on collusion with management companies and broadcasting companies”.

Good review again

Kim Junsu Tops the August V-chart of China YinYueTai & a Music Critic Gives His Comments

Music critic for the August V-chart of China YinYueTai: BaoBao (爆爆), the Executive Chief Editor of the South Korea Division of Cool Music (Cool轻音乐), a famous Chinese magazine for K-pop & J-pop

Today, Kim Junsu has the first-class background, the first-class talent, the first-class diligence and the first-class popularity, so it is almost as sure as nails that his new single—Uncommitted—will top the August V-chart. What’s more commendable than his incredible talent is that he never forgets who he is despite all the fame and success he has gained. Unquestionably he is now in a position where he can make his fans go crazy for him by only doing some sexy duckbutt-shaking or high notes. But he doesn’t want to stay where he is. He wants to be a real singer, a singer who wants to make everyone fall for his singing and dancing in spite of the lack of fair promotion on TV.

A globally best team was put together for Uncommitted. This R&B pop song, written and composed by Bruce Automatic Vanderveer, takes Junsu away from the K-pop world and into the western music world. Although one cannot connect Junsu in reality with the playboy described in the MV, Junsu’s acting as a good man with a playboy history is convincing since he has proven himself that he can successfully express temptation, Yuppie and darkness through his eyes. In this MV directed by Marc Klasfeld, a famous MV director for super stars, Junsu is telling you a love story through his eyes in every scene. With “Angel Xiah” (a characteristic gesture of Junsu, with both hands under his chin, a slight tilt of his head and the tadpole-like smiling eyes) in our memories, Junsu has grown up to be a brave and reliable man. Uncommitted? No. Junsu has been fulfilling the commitments he’s made to himself and his fans, as always; and he has been surprising us, as always.

Only the Junsu-related is translated.

Translation 1:

MC: The last character! Dance, Acting, Music, Sexy, Coquette!!! (repeats coquette..rofl) The solo album that was charming in all areas…I believe Yucheon monitored it too, how was it?

Yucheon: When Junsu’s MV was released, I had finished filming (for drama) and was going to go wash in the dorm. We were in the countryside so the LTE wasn’t working when I wanted to watch it. I had 1 hour to sleep but I used that time to watch Junsu’s MV.

Translation 2:

Yucheon: The first thing I thought after watching it was, ‘There’s no one like Junsu in the Kpop industry.’ I told him that too.

[Junsu so cute being embarrassed.. his face got so red!!!]

When Junsu brought out that album, it seemed to draw a line on an entirely new level (of performance/music quality).

MC: (gives Su a tissue) There’s no other solo singer who is as good as Junsu in this day and age.. (summarizing Yucheon’s statement) How about you Jaejoong? When the MV came out?

Translation 3:

Jaejoong: It’s the same for me too. Everybody knows that Junsu sings well, but I realized that he can also dominate the world with his dance.

[Su embarrased again~Kawaii~ >_<]

MC: (gives another tissue. haha) The whole world…

Jaejoong: He was called Asia’s best vocalist in the past, but he can also be called Asia’s best dancer..

Yucheon: Asia is too small for Junsu.

Junsu: Hold on… I appreciate this very much but I’m gonna be in trouble~ (or, this is dangerous)

Translation 4:

MC: Solo album, character.. I heard you prepared a lot.

Junsu: Um…..Good. (lol what?) First of all, I’ve talked about these (gestures to screen) a lot before so I don’t think I need to again. Above all else, I think it’s the happiest moment when you are recognized by your own members. I was very strengthened. Thank you.

MC: (talks about how he looks forward to their next/future characters) So now everyone, don’t you want to see more of JYJ’s charms in detail?

Translation 5 (last):

MC: They will present to you their fatal charms.. first up, JYJ’s maknae Junsu prepared a special stage. You got a lot of compliments from the hyungs (JJ & YC) earlier so (can’t hear). Please go get ready. I’ll also meet you all later with the new script and until then, we’ll leave it to Jaejoong!

(well…that’s the gist of the conversation… mostly paraphrased)

[NEWS] 120410 Musical Elisabeth’s Death (Tod), a fascinating dance which invades your soul!

[NEWS] 120410 Musical Elisabeth’s Death (Tod), a fascinating dance which invades your soul!

Kim Junsu’s ‘Death (Tod)’ dominates the stage with his unique presence.

Whenever the Angels of Death with blonde hair and black wings dance their terrifyingly beautiful dance, ‘he’ will appear without fail. His sweet words of temptation with a dreamy whispered melody agitate and pierce through the listener’s heart. Like a devil, while his warm whisper ‘Only I can understand you’ is soaking through your cold and lonely heart, he steals your soul away.

The main focus in the story of musical ‘Elisabeth’ is the character Queen Elisabeth but unexpectedly, the one standing in the background of this story is ‘Death’. Having an unrestrained childhood but after a dramatic happening, Queen Elisabeth of Austria had her freedom snatched away and lived a life of a manipulated puppet. The fate of Elisabeth whose soul was tied up invisibly can be seen as a hanging marionette in a puppet show and the one who controls over the restrained soul of the Queen is indeed ‘Death’.

The composer of the musical, Sylvester Levay explained about ‘Death’ in an interview ‘A charming character who seduces the audience’. In addition, ‘He is so charming that he gives the audience a strong strength to shake off the fear of death.’ Sylvester Levay also shared a touching anecdote ‘There was a girl who was sick and afraid of death but after watching the musical, she gained back the desire to live a happy life.’ Just like what Sylvester Levay has said, the allure of ‘Death’ in this musical is fatal. How to portray such a character which is not human, beast, angel or even devil?! With the feet as fast as a hidden eagle and footsteps as sensual as a killer leopard, he comes closer and stabs his dagger to the vital point of the target.

While a beast moves its body in order to hunt for prey, ‘Death’ and his Angels dance their appealing dance in order to put the target’s forever love into Death’s hand. The fascinating dance between the party who seduces – ‘Death’ and the Angels of Death- and the party who tries to escape – Elisabeth- is paradoxically extremely beautiful and magnificent. Not only Elisabeth but even the audience fell for his dance.

Indefinable appearance is also an interesting point of the multicoloured ‘Death’. Particularly, the songs of ‘Death’ are also filled with various aspects. On the wedding day of Elisabeth and Joseph, he sings “Are you sincere with your choice? Your reverie about him is just an illusion”, then shouts out crazily “The last dance. My last dance. I will dance with you in the end. You are only mine” and shows the insane jealousy of a ‘man who fell in love’. However, while demanding Elisabeth’s son- Rudolf to rebel “What is there to hesitate. You are rescuing the world. Right now, this is fate. Only you can rescue this collapsing world”, he is an ‘evil’ who is playing with the hope of life.

The musical doesn’t build any restriction for ‘Death’. Coming from the depressing sensibility of Elisabeth, his symbolic presence also changes with Elisabeth’s state of mind; one moment, he would fill up her loneliness with love but the next moment, he desperately wants to set free every string of hope. He is a shadow who follows after Elisabeth endlessly. Also, it might be reasonable that he said to Elisabeth “Only I can understand you and give you the freedom”. ‘Death’ is no other than another self of Elisabeth that she invented in order to express the irresistible dark greed.

Being able to meet 3 different actors with 3 different colours of ‘Death’ on stage is another unconventional enjoyment in the musical ‘Elisabeth’. Having different personalities, Ryu Junghan, Kim Junsu and Song Changeui diversely interpret their own charming ‘Death’.

Specially, Kim Junsu’s ‘Death’ has received favourable comment from the audience and dominated the stage with his unique presence. Younger than other two actors, he has given an unexpected charming interpretation in response to the doubts about how he would portray a nonhuman character. Simply as a sensual and manly character, while forming a love triangle with the Emperor Joseph and Queen Elisabeth, he becomes a ‘dangerous being’ which is not woman, man, human or spirit and above that dangerous boundary, he reveals his deadly beauty.

Being neutral in between woman and man, sometimes in whispering high tone, sometimes in low tone, the seducing Kim Junsu goes back and forth in both sides and surprises the audience with his dual voice which creates a clever combination. Not belonging to any particular area, he added his unique sensibility into the bisexual allure of the transcendent ‘Death’ who attracts anything, and revived the appealing character.

[REVIEW] 120409 Reviews of XiahTod on Twitter!

(@ccoccary writes music and lyrics, and translates lyrics for musicals. @nylong is a musical director)

@ccoccary: Kim Junsu, the ‘Death.’ His voice-sharp and full of harmonics-sucked up the whole theatre like a huge vacuum, carried by his movements like a leopardess. He really is an incredible person, who deserves applause and cheering. I want him to do Oscar of Rose of Versailles.(T/N: Rose of Versailles is a animations that was very very popular in Korea)

@nylong: @ccoccary Lepoadessㅎㅎ I think the Tod character in Elizabeth essentially needs to be bisexual. You shouldn’t expect eternalness to a love of a bisexual. His love equals death~

@ccoccary: @nylong He was so pretty.. I usually think it’s unattractive or weird when a man is pretty but he was fantastic!

@nylong: @ccoccary You fell in love with actor Junsu’s charm. Why don’t we dedicate(T/N: ‘dedicate’ means making a musical only for a specific actor) a musical (to him)ㅋ 3 weeks with just one character.

@ccoccary: @nylong Ku-hakhakㅋㅋㅋLet’s make a fortune firstㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋBtw I was his fan since Mozart! Such a vacuum-like actor Kimㅋㅋㅋ

@Poison_Tree I became a big fan(of Junsu) after watching Mozart! ㅋㅋHe is really suited to this role! Feels like a mix of boy+a beast from the cat family+woman? (To be honest I don’t prefer that kind of vocal but Kim Junsu makes me overpass the wall!ㅋㅋㅋ)

@ccoccary: A voice that has a lot of harmonics like Junsu sounds husky(Lee Haee, Lim Jae Bum, Lee Sora, etc). A voice is not a simple wave, but many waves overlapped, and it’s different for everyone because the distinct shape of the waves are different. Junsu’s voice is husky, and at the same time, a voice that hits like an arrow.

(@charmingmermaid is one of the ensemble of Elizabeth)
@charmingmermaid: I didn’t know well (about Junsu) because I never listened to his songs or watched his performances, and wasn’t even interested before. But I became a fan while keep listening to and watching Junsu-ssi’s performance these days. Ah..He’s really good.. I think he’s getting more suited to the role everyday. Really so beautiful~ #fb

@ eunyshow : @ enkiJ87 I don’t know how to descirbe the feeling he is not like a human. The character of Death, which had not been right, seems to be on my hand after watching XiahTod. Diction and vocalization became better like another person. And as I watched from the front seat, characters become alive… T

@ eunyshow: Music composed by Sylvester Levay. More I listen, different tones and frequencies of vibration penetrate into weakness of human. Also, we can see how much he loves Tod from his music. XiahTod’s interpretation of the character is very interesting. Musical Elisabeth… shining stage from ensemble to the main cast.

@ lalalamiso: wow wow I cannot get away from the seduction by Death of XiahTod in Elisabeth. Daebak (amazing)! It was wonderful night to spend good time with [I omit names of people]! Junsu’s mother that I met at the back stage was really pretty and thank you for giving birth an amazing son~~

@ lalalamiso: @ babyilike I am into XiahTod’s magical charm! I realized why people say/praise Junsu, Junsu. He work in harmony with OkEli, Min Youngki and Lucheni very well. I want to see it again!

[@ jihyuk_park is a reporter]

@ jihyuk_park: XiahTod was strange but fatal. Especially when he came out wearing cotton flannel leggings in Act 2, I almost shouted out send XiahTod to figure skating. The stage with lots of effects was also fun to watch. I think all the actors and actresses were best today.

@ jihyuk_park: I thought Tod was not a human when he came out from behind the bed at the scene when he first meets Rudolf. I wondered how many actors there can be who can express the character ‘Death’ very well like him during the scene Mayerling-Walzer where he leads Rudolf to Death

@ kelee33: Elisabeth… by Xiah Junsu and Ok Juhyeon!!! It is really charming…I…didn’t know Xiah Junsu but he is really good… ^^

knowing that many professionals admit Junsu’s ability on musical, make me proud.

so he’s not just a selling ticket actor, but he is  a real musical actor

[NEWS] 120331 Musical ‘Elisabeth’ is Kim Junsu’s mini concert (?)

[NEWS] 120331 Musical ‘Elisabeth’ is Kim Junsu’s mini concert (?)

JYJ member Kim Junsu’s role ‘Death’ in the musical is in the center of attention. In ‘Elisabeth’, his role is a transcendent character that follows Elisabeth around and seduces her with the desired freedom which only he can give to her.

In fact, the special characteristic of the role Tod is in the combination of songs and choreography rather than his lines in the musical. Therefore, if Kim Junsu’s acting in the role ‘Tod’ was set aside, the musical could be mistaken as a small unique musical concert.

From a soft ballad or a thrilling dance song to a sweet yet sorrowful duet, the songs flowing through his lips in each scene are painted with various colours. Even the sound of his breath seems like a poem being recited, one moment he came closer and whispered the murmurs of sweet love; the next moment he shouted and burst out like fireworks, showing the Black Devil’s allure. With a sexy and detailed choreography added up, his stage was sublimated into a supreme performance.

‘The last dance’ is the highlight of the show where the audience can feel Kim Junsu’s full energy. There is no need to include any further explanation; this scene is enough to explain why he was casted by the producers and why his ability was acknowledged by some of the greatest artists in the world like Robert Johanson or Sylvester Levay.

The superb scene which can only be seen in the combination of Kim Junsu’s ‘Tod’ and the ensemble ‘Angels of the Death’ stands out from the rest. It was a moment where not only Elisabeth but everyone in the audience fell for the allure of ‘Death’. The addictive melody and a strong performance which no one can take their eyes off for just a single moment have lifted the climax of his devotion and perfection higher.

The overwhelming ovation when Kim Junsu appears at the curtain call reminds of an actual concert. Getting up out of the seat, everyone in the audience clapped their hands while singing along or swaying their shoulders to the rhythm, and enhanced the sound intensity of the concert hall to the maximum.

After enjoying fully the climax of the show, even when the light in the hall was on, the audiences still haven’t realized that they have get up out of their seats for a good while. The excitement of the audience couldn’t fade away at all. That is the power to portray ‘Tod’ from a different dimension of the musical genius Kim Junsu.
