An Interview with Junsu at NYC Press Conference : part 1

Q. What do you feel about completing asia tour and starting world tour?
A. I’ve toured Asia many times but, as a solo, this was my first Asian tour. At the beginning there were many worries and apprehensions. Having performance at the Hong Kong concert, I recalled the time when I first took courage. Since TV activities are impossible it is quite burdonsome to release no single but a regular album and to release an album for holding concerts. Amid many worries, I mustered up courage, released the album, and received more love than expected. Rather than saying concerts were fruitful, I think it was an opportunity for me to see small hope and light for the future. The year 2012 is dreamlike, and meaningful to me. During the worldwide tour starting in New York, I will do my best with a sense of responsibility that I will hold concerts in U.S. and South America as a representative of Korea and Asia.
Q. You will sing musical numbers at NY concert. What musical did you watch yesterday?
A. The musical numbers I’m gonna sing are originally German but I will sing it in Korean. Yesterday I watched the musical Spiderman for the first time in U.S. Very splendid.
Q. You changed your hair color for each country during Asia tour
A. Many dissuaded me and I also felt changing hair-color was very hard for me, but I did by force of mind. After changing color for 2 countries, I thought if I gave up changing it, it might be seemed less sincere. By will that I’ll do my best for every country, I dyed my hair with color that represents each country, and it was interesting. During Asian tour concerts, filming was kept proceeded and if I see the color of my hair I can tell in which country I had that concert. In China it was red, in Indonesia blue, in Hongkong purple, in Thailand yellow. Due to frequent dyeing my hair becomes so shorter that I use hair treatment now. Haha.
Q. Worldwide tour is right following your Asia tour. Do you have any problem with your physical condition?
A. No problem. Compared with the previous time, I can afford to well manage my schedule. And the 1st Asian tour made me accustomed to such tight schedule. Time difference is a little bit worrisome but two hours at concert is okay..
Q. Did members of JYJ give support for your worldwide tour?
A. They congratulated me. We always support and congratulate each other whenever a member engages in drama, musical, or concert. I’m deeply grateful to the two.
Q. In the MV of your single, your image is a boy who plays well with girl models.
A. The MV isn’t a kind of having a full-story, but image cuts and drama cuts are mixing well. It was interesting to act as a bad boy. It was first time to work with local director of U.S., and all staff members were American. At first it was hard for me to do acting with American actresses. Yet Staff wanted me to freely express so that they let me act freely and intermittently gave me advice. They worked so good in film-cutting. There won’t be such dramatic factors on the stage (at concerts) but there will be choreography that is suitable for R&B tempo because ‘Uncommitted’ is kind of Urban Pop.
Q. You did great job in using featering in Uncommitted. Have you ever thought about collaboration?
A. At first I didn’t want to change the guide. If too much Korean factors were included in the song, it may lead to deviation from the very original intention of releasing an album. I made an attempt to discard my own style of singing this time. I liked voice of composer Automatic so that I’d like to use his voice in rap and narration in order to make an ideal song. I sang in a manner of relaxing, not being too heavy but light and rhythmical since Uncommitted is not only a ballad song but also a rhythmical one. At the time I sang it with enjoyment and with no head-set but a microphone right in my hand in order to give listeners a sense of listening live music. I can say Tarantallegra is a song to show and Uncommitted is a song to listen.
Q. The record of album sales is good, and you are the 1st Korean male solo to have worldwide tour from Asia to America and Europe.
A. It’s really burdonsome for me to do by myself. When chief of my agency mentioned a worldwide tour including South America and Europe with my solo album, I worried a lot. And, coupled with worry about whether to act in drama, the last year was a year of dilemma for me. In order to appear on TV, I have to perform in drama. Yet, I have more confidence in singing and dancing on the stage. I had so many thoughts and I had my own pride. If I choose releasing an album, I want to release a better one. But I couldn’t be sure whether investing in an album is good or not. The agency said it would invest but It was me who worried about it. I wanted to do good job but if my solo activities ends with no one recognizing my album is released, then it’s better not to release the album.
During preparation for the musical Elizabeth, chief of my agency brought me a role of hero in drama and we had talks. What I had to decide is to appear in drama or not but, suddenly, I took a notion of trying to make my album, to take on the challenge. Singing is most confidently my strongest point so that I wanna do what I’m confident in, and, members of jyj have been doing well in drama activities so that it’s harder for me to engage in. I asked the chief whether I could make an album and told him I would make an attempt though it may end in failure. Now is the time in which the broadcast can no longer control all and people around the world can have an easy access to contents on the Internet sites like YOutube. So, I thought that the situation is not such desperate as that of the previous time. At first I told him the concept of MV. Though I release an album, I can’t show my contents through broadcast or live stage. That is why I told him I had to bank on MV. I’m grateful to the agency who gave support as mentioned and pleased with the good result.

Kim Junsu “The First Korean Singer Who is to Hold a Concert in Mexico – I’m Honored”

im Junsu “The First Korean Singer Who is to Hold a Concert in Mexico – I’m Honored”

Q. You are the 1st Korean singer to hold a concert in Mexico.
A. This is my first visit to Mexico and I’m so pleased to hold a concert. Though it’s the 1st, I’m very honored to hear that more than 3000 fans would come to my concert. When I heard I would hold a concert in Mexico, I came to think again that now K-pop is worldwide known. In return for Mexican fans’ support, I hope to show a great performance.
Q. You had concerts as a member of JYJ in Chile and Peru, and now in Mexico. It’s said you’re especially popular in Mid- and South America.
A. Really? Haha. Fans from Mid and South America are especially passionate. I’m the most active member in JYJ so they might think so. Well, each country has its own preference for style of songs of mine or JYJ. Americans respond most actively to club-dance music. Japaneses prefer sad ballad songs, Asians like dance music with gorgeous performance. Europeans seems to have diverse preference.
Q. During worldwide tour, what comes in your mind?
A. This year my flight milage is accumulated to reach as many as 500,000 miles. Following a concert in Mexico, I’ll have a concert in Brazil. Yet, it was unbelievable even to me that I could hold concerts here. Indeed, it was the same when I had concerts as a member of JYJ in Spain, Germany, Chile, and Peru. I know the power of K-pop and I came to think I should try harder and harder in order not damage the K-pop boom which was born among benign competition of Korean singers and have a sense of responsibility.
Q. Last May you released the 1st solo album and Last August the english single Uncommitted, and now you’re on the worldwide tour. How do you feel about?
A. In light that I couldn’t do regular activities or promotion via media even though I released an album, I had a negative thought about releasing my solo album in the beginning. Thus, I planed to do drama activities and actually decided a role of mini-series drama. Yet what I wanted to do most is music, and I thought it’s right to release an album first before the appearance in drama in response to fans who have waited for me. And, I thought now is the time in which TV promotion is not the only one. So, after careful consideration I gave up to appear in drama and released a solo album and an english single for international fans in August.
Considering that the solo album has received much love and now I can have a worldwide tour, it was a great decision to release the album. This year is the year of hope to me.
Q. Did the worldwide tour after releasing the solo album make any difference to you?
A. When I do activities as a singer my mindset becomes different from when I perform as a musical actor. Likewise, I should show different music during my solo activity from that of JYJ. I made some differences in sessions and make-up and I’m trying to be more confidently and actively during talk time in concerts. During concerts of JYJ, it’s members who lead talk time, but, during my solo concert, I meet the audience alone. And having concerts after my solo album shapes my view over music again. In addition, I thought I have to avoid ordinary concept and now I’m trying to show performance much more than before.
Q. Do members of JYJ give any support to you?
A. not only during worldwide tour but also on usual days we asked each other “are you ok? (or is it hard?).” All members are now in hard time but we are happy. We are good supporters to each other. I’m very proud of my members. And we are making efforts to constantly show various activities.
Q. In the latest concert in L.A. you danced a horse dance of Gangnam Style.
A. At the time all fans there shouted “Gangnam Style” as if they promised to do so. So, I danced it twice. All the audience asked me, so, I couldn’t help daincing. Haha.
Q. What is different after performing in the musical plays?
A. It was the first time I did acting. I was intoxicated in the role and show performance I couldn’t imagine previously. Musical activities dispel my fear about change and transformation. This helped me do try dramatical change when I started my solo activities. The musical also gives me inspiration. During “Mozart!,” I wrote the song “Fallen Leaves,” and, “Elizabeth” inspired to the song “Tarantallegra.” I’m happy because I can experience both stages of musical plays and singer. If I can well balance between the two parts, I think that will be helpful to me.
Q. What image of idol do you want to be remembered as?
A. though I’m an idol singer, I want to show my music is outstanding. And the members of JYJ compose their own songs in order to put this idea into practice.
Q. You might be lonely to do such tight schedule. Do you want to have a girlfriend?
A. I always think it may be good to have a girl freind. I have no ideal type in terms of her look but have ideal type of polite and girlish girl in terms of personality. I’ve had girl friends before but not now. And if I have a girl friend now, I suppose she’s gonna spurn me right now. Haha.
Q. What’s your plan after the worldwide tour ends?
A. First, I want to take rest. Haha. I think I can take rest in happiness of completing the worldwide tour well. This worldwide tour is giving me a large amount of energy. I’ve yet decided what to do after the worldwide tour – to release an album or to appear in a drama or in a musical play. No matter what I choose I’m sure that will give me great energy.

[JAP/ENG] ジュンス、上海でのインタビュー映像 / JUNSU, Interview at Shanghai Press Conference

[JAP/ENG] ジュンス、上海でのインタビュー映像 /

JUNSU, Interview at Shanghai Press Conference

1. (紹介?)

そしてJeri slaughterという最高のコリオグラファー、最先端のダンスなどがよくまじられ、

1. Introduction?

First of all, this album is my first solo album so that I was able to make it much more reflect my thoughts. And, I’ve produced overall parts of this album.

Most of all, the concept of this album is ‘Unequalled.’ I hoped to highlight uniqueness and specificity so that I made it become music when a song, fashion, make-up and etc get together.

With unprecedentedly costly mv, equipments and sets, best choreographer Jeri Slaughter, and sophisticated dance,

it was possible for me to make the mv have atmosphere of fantasy.

2.The impression of Shanghai?

Very big, tall, and broad..its buildings are really beautiful…

and, especially, whenever I visit Shanghai, I come to think that its night view is really beautiful.

I hope to see night scene of Shanghai at my hotel room tonight.

3.The next plan or schedule?

The concerts will be continuing for long time. I’ve yet determined…

but it seems that the concerts will be continued. So, I hope I can successfully complete the tour.

And next, there are many options and I haven’t decided could be the musical, or an album, or the TV activities.

4.Which song do you like most?

Umm…I’ve received such a question for several times. Frankly, I’ve made almost all of the songs in the album so that, for me, the songs feel like my children. Thus, it’s difficult to choose just one song. And, which song I like most is depending on my mood on the very day. Well, if I have to choose only one, I’d like to pick up Tarantallegra because I think it is most suitable for the concept of ‘Unequalled.’

[NEWS] 120129 JYJ Kim Junsu “The Scariest Thing in the First South America Concert is..”

[NEWS] 120129 JYJ Kim Junsu “The Scariest Thing in the First South America Concert is..”

JYJ’s Kim Junsu conveyed his anticipation for the upcoming March concerts in Peru and Chile.

During a recent meeting with reporters, Junsu said, “It has been five years since I last went to the South America continent after shooting a commercial in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2007. I stayed for about four to five days at that time and I did not have a chance to see many things so I was unsatisfied.” He also mentioned, “This time, I will be together with passionate people in a new environment. I have the greatest anticipation towards the concerts this time.”

In particular, he has recently returned to South Korea after the completion of JYJ’s concert in Spain. Chile, Peru and Spain share a similar culture and use Spanish so his anticipation increases since he is able to personally experience the fans’ passion again. The fans’ looks when they were enjoying the concert together with him moved Junsu more than when the fans were just simply appreciating it.

“If there is one thing that scares me, it is the flight time. Previously when I was traveling to Brazil, it took more than 15 hours via Paris, France. This time, it will take longer than that,” Junsu said with a long sigh.

He continued, “You will be able to see the most perfect concert in South America as we will be making it like it is the last JYJ’s world tour.” He also promised that he would visit the fans in Latin America such as Brazil and Mexico someday.

Meanwhile, JYJ will be holding their solo concerts in Chile on March 9 and Peru on March 11 and Junsu’s musical “Elisabeth” will start from February 9.

[Trans] 120130 [Trans] Kim Junsu’s Exclusive Interview: It’s Really Crazy To Be Compared With Cho Seung Woo Hyung‏

[Trans] 120130 [Trans] Kim Junsu’s Exclusive Interview: It’s Really Crazy To Be Compared With Cho Seung Woo Hyung‏

[Musical Elisabeth’s Lead Kim Junsu]

To compare me, who has only participated in three works, with the best senior…

Due to the pressure received for being an idol and overcame it in debut work, ‘Mozart’.

If were to reborn, I would not be an artiste.

During the later half of 2009, musical ‘Mozart’ production team’s EMK musical company had the last contractual discussion with TVXQ member Xiah Junsu. Xiah Junsu was the best as an idol singer but the experience for musical was naught. The performance fee that the company proposed was different from the request by Xiah Junsu’s representative. The 3000 seatings in Sejong Cultural Centre for the performance was considered to be a large hall. “The 3rd floor won’t be filled up anyway,” this was what the production company thought. The situation ended with Xiah Junsu’s representative’s , “Our Junsu can do it.”

“Our Junsu” made it. At the opening of ‘Mozart’ on January 2010, the crowd filled up the three floors of Sejong Cultural Centre. There were hundreds of Japanese middle-aged ladies who held the air ticket in one hand and the other hand holding onto to a binoculars, flying across the sea to see him. Xiah Junsu gained the title of ‘Running Guarantee’ (Performance fee received based on the tickets’s sales) with 30 million won fee. Last year, the online ticketing system crashed for his second work, ‘Tears of Heaven’ and the tickets were sold out within 5 minutes.

“Our Junsu” Xiah Junsu (Kim Junsu) will be the male lead Tod for ‘Elisabeth’ that is opening next February 9th. When we met on the 27th in a cafe at Seoul’s Jeong-dong, Jong-gu, his seemingly thin frame made others curious about the charm that made his noona fans lost their mind over this 25 year-old young adult. He reached 8 minutes later of scheduled time and lowered his head, saying ‘sorry’. His sincerity about punctuality during the practice sessions was complimented by many.

– Your ticket selling power was compared with ‘Musical Sage’ Cho Seung Woo. How do you feel about it?

“It’s really crazy. Please don’t do this. Isn’t Seung Woo hyung the best in musical industry? Although I am thankful, it’s best not to compare with me who is only just about to start my 3rd musical work. If the comparison was made after I acted in more than ten musicals, probably I wouldn’t be wanting to hide away (like now).”

– When you debuted in musical, nobody expected Xiah Junsu to be such successful. Personally, what is the reason behind your success?

“When I received the musical proposal, I did not sleep well for a week. Because this is my first step after independency (from the previous company SM Entertainment), thus I was very troubled. I did heard of discrimination against idols in musical industry too. However, other than me myself, nobody can protect me. Moreover there’s no existence of protective barrier at all. I am very clear about it.”

– The part where you worked hard due to your status as an idol?

“Being an idol is a double-sided blade. Although you are able to easily attained the lead and received the limelight but there’s the enormous hinder. Due to the performance in musical and overcame the obstacle and learnt about life. ‘In this world, having a dream will need to accept the woes as well’, whenever I am listening to the songs in Mozart, I would cry a lot inside me. As an artiste and to face the public judgement, the pressure is huge, and he (musical/Mozart) speak it out for me.”

– Other than the songs in musical, there were a lot of elements added in, which is your favourite?

“When I first stood on the musical stage, I crazily felt that it’s embarrassing. After I have done it, the joy that it brought me was totally different from a concert. In the two hours on stage, I am not idol Xiah Junsu but as someone else. I like this point a lot.”

In July 2009, after the successful injunction filed by him and two other TVXQ members towards SM Entertainment due to unfair contract length and income etc, they emerged as JYJ. However after that, as singers, JYJ are unable to appear on national broadcasting companies. In the one hour, he has been friendly answering everything, however he paused for a while towards such an inquiry.

“One can’t live (in the past). Have to keep holding on and rough it out. I had the thinking that I have to work even harder. To be able to do what we want, I think this is the happiest to us (JYJ).”

– Many teens dreamt to be the next Xiah Junsu?

“I would not be an artiste in my next life. (He repeated this thrice) Of course as of now, I have no regrets in my life. It is very happy to receive love and concern. But after I passed the audition when I was 15, I have never been in my relaxed mode the minute I went out the door. I have never been to Lotte World either. Sometimes I do felt that I’ve wasted it. It is very tough to be receiving provoking comments from others too. However I have to admit that it’s normal to have losses in life and to understand the surroundings and into thankfulness.”

With regards to new work ‘Elisabeth’, “Working with (Ryu) Jung Han hyung who also acted as Tod, (Song) Chang ui and Kim Sun Young noona and Ock Joo Hyun noona who acted as Elisabeth, is the biggest subject (to learn).” “Recently I am only listening to music from musicals. I would like to try choosing works for small-scaled musicals.”

111105 JYJ Berlin Concert Press Conference

Junsu:..we came to Europe. Last week, in Barcelona Spain, we had our first exculsive concert, and we’re here in Berlin today, since we’re planning to have another concert this Sunday..

Jaejoong:..thank you for your unexpected attention, and I think it was a great opporunity, a driving force for us, JYJ, to improve more in the future..

Yoochun: Every time when we visit different places, we feel new about ‘there are fans who are supporing us’, and in a way it is amazing and very thankful. The happiness of meeting many poeple while we travel various countries with a purpose of challenge.

Junsu: We’re making an effort to the extent that isn’t too difficult.

Q. There is a significance as the first K-POP performance in Berlin. In that point of view, please tell us your future plans or concert schedules targeting the European market.
Jaejoong: To be honest, I think we don’t have the traditional characteristic of K-POP. I think it’s just that as manias of the music we do in Korea-who love our JYJ-ish, JYJ-like music and performance-increased, the K-POP wave was formed. (about people who loves JYJ’s music)

Junsu: We chose Spain, which can embrace Western Europe, and Berlin, which can embrace Eastern, Northern Europe, a place where fans can gather easily. There isn’t a speical reason. Instead, if we succeed in making a great stage, and recieve favorable responses, I think we’ll have more chances to meet European fans in other countries and cities in the future.

Junsu: If there is a distiction between, for example a huge entertainment company’s planned concert, and ours, I think we have competitiveness in an aspect of the diversity of genre and the possibility of storytelling. We should work hard in the first place to be a team that people can sincerely like, not only by words. We will keep making an effor to become a team like that.

(because the video was cut off, there are some ‘…’ parts, where the boys’ words were cut off too.)
